Check engine light comes on, car sputters, loses power, and shifting becomes irregular. Dealer mechanics say it's fuel line related (checked gas cap, all was fine) dealer checked codes, but said they couldn't find any problem, reset the codes, two weeks later same thing happened. Have appt to bring back in. When the check engine light is off, the car runs fine, there is no sputtering or shifting issues. Not sure what triggers the check engine light, but once it comes on all the troubles start. 06' PT Cruiser 2.4Ltr automatic 70K km (43K Miles)

have the fault codes read and use a quality injector cleaner in the fuel
it could be low fuel pressure , injector problems or accelerator position sensor related
I'm a mechanic by trade and I see this all the time. Many things can happen that cause this, bad gas, I see this more and more, a clogged fuel filter, bad spark plugs and wires, but the first competent I check is the O2 sensor. This sensor can become clogged and fill with black soot, when they go out the car can become sluggish, losing power and will affect fuel mileage
when check engine light comes on VSC is disabled. small leak is for evaporative system (to prevent fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere) small leak is A leak less than forty thousandths of an inch, it could possibly be a gas cap not fully tightened, leak in a vapor line, leaking fuel filler neck, gas tank leak, purge valve, vent valve just to name afew. clearing code will turn off both lights but if theres a leak lights will come back on.
P0440-This Relates to System for Evaporative Emission. You will need to check the purge cannister that is in the engine bay and connects as a vent to fuel system and fuel tank.Loosen the fuel cap and roadtest, should change the faults or eliminate.Get back to me with your findings and we can work towards a solution.I hope that this helps.
yes this is a warranty item as it relates to the emission purge system ( pressure test for gas tank ). but before you go make sure your gas cap is tight (3 clicks) sometimes after getting fuel a loose gas cap will trip the purge solenoid valve to think there is a leak.
Check the ignition switch condition and operation.
The electrical contacts in the run position may be worn or damaged.
Try restarting the engine with all electrical accessories in the off
position. Sometimes turning the key on an off will help in emergency
situations, however once the switch has shown signs of failure, it
should be replaced as soon as possible.
Check for loose, corroded, damaged or shorted wires for the ignition system and repair or replace.
Check for manifold vacuum leaks or vacuum hose leakage and repair or replace parts as necessary.
Measure the fuel pump delivery volume and
pressure. Low fuel pump pressure can also be noticed as a lack of
power when accelerating. Make sure the fuel pump lines are not
restricted. The fuel pump output is not adjustable and requires fuel
pump replacement to repair.
Check the engine fuel and ignition management
system. Inspect the sensor wiring and electrical connectors. A dirty,
loose or damaged sensor or control module wire can simulate a failed
component.
Check the exhaust system for internal restrictions.
There is a recall on the fuel pump. If your car is sputtering and losing power, it is probably a fuel issue and I would suspect the fuel pump. It is a recall so the dealer has to replace it for free.
