Varnish in the carburetors means that the carbs had gas sitting in it for a while and caused the gas to harden up and clog the carbs causing it to flow back into the breather, im assuming this is the issue your having bud. and if it;s only been a few weeks sitting might be able to get away with soem car cleaner spay, but makesure you dont ruin the orings or rubber seals, good luck with it.
Apparrently the float isn't stopping the fuel flow. Just smell the oil for an oder of gas and remember to shut off gas at the tank in the future. My 1972 Trophy has did the same sinnce it was new. Not a worry. For piece of mind you could change the oil.
The fuel flow was not shut off when you found the leak right? If your leak has not returned then it was most likely caused from the fuel being forced back through float bowl, then up and out the air inlet in to your air cleaner. How much fuel did you find? Once the flow has been shut of to the carburetor there's not much fuel left to leak out. Maybe a 1/4 cup.
If you had more then that it had to be coming from the tank.

Thanks tom I will try your sugestion
One other thing when I put the bike back together it ran about 25% better as if one of the carb's had not been working .
My honda once had its fuel valve fail I would turn it off but gas would still slowly flow. Turn the gas to off and carefully remove the gas line. Have some rags available to absorb any gas still held in the line. Watch this line to see if fuel continues to flow, if so your valve is bad. I hope this helped, Tom
