1996 Suzuki Savage 650 backfires on cutoff

My 1996 Suzuki Savage 650 backfires when I cut the engine. It also backfires or pops when i let off the throttle at high speeds. Also the head gasket is leaking, does this have anything to do with it?

I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.

Try using the higher octane gas, if you already do not. Run a few bottles of techron through the system, and remove the EPA **** that is on the bike. I did all 3, and it stopped my bike from backfiring.

Engine backfireing suzuki 650 ls

Most of the time it is the timing the exhaust valve is opening when the motor is ready to fire or problem 2 could be valves not seating properly

Hi when i start my 650 savage & leave it ticking over the manifold glows red hot & then changes to a purple colour is this the norm! rgds steve

The exhaust manafold should NOT glow red, check for intake manafold leak, this can cause a lean running condition and can lead to severe engine damage.

My Suzuki Savage 650 backfires when I cut the engine also pops when I let off the throttle at high speed How can I fix It ?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Sounds like a very lean mix; confirm by checking the sparkplug tips. If the burn is very light brown to almost whitish, then it would be lean - too much air, too little fuel. Check for an air leak in the air filter box/enclosure. This would also happen if the air filter has been replaced with an aftermarket free breather (like K & Ns) or the exhaust has been replaced and no jettings done.

Postback results of initial checks.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

1996 Suzuki Savage 650, engine knocks

knocking increases with engine speed ...check for worn wrist pin to piston clearance, rod bottom bearing clearance, very unlikely the timing chain has any kinks with a chain tensioner set properly...a loose chain could make some noise so check the tension setting
