Just want to know how to replace brake lever correctly. I just bought this bike, took a safety course, and now I'm riding. I am very new to street riding so I'm extra cautious. However, I accidently broke the brake lever when I made a bad judgment call. I just want to make sure i put it together correctly. It looks easy but I still want to check. I did buy a cable lubricant and tool to apply it with. Please help. Amber Bogott

OK.... The problem is your brake lever. There is nothing wrong with your braking system, Master Cylinder is fine, pads are fine, fluid is fine, everything is fine. Replace that brake lever with the original one your took off, if not, it will cost you your life. I know I was almost killed due to the wrong brake lever. Everything on the new lever looks right. Right? Same, pin hole size, the plunger seems to fit perfect, the brake light switch flange, it fits, appears to work fine, doesn't bind.. Then wham!! You lock up. DO NOT RIDE WITH THAT NEW LEVER ON.. No matter how expensive it was. Live with the Stock one until you can be sure that the next one you buy is absolutely and irrevically safe to ride with. This MOD is not worth your life. FYI, my lock up occurred in the dark, US 101, lane three, 80mph. 80mph to 0mph in 1 second flat. Bike did not flip just came to a massive stop. I will spare you the "Most frightening 2 minutes of my life". I have 26 years of riding experience, and one stupid mod nearly took my life, and my bike, and more importantly, could have taken someone else's life, or scarred them for life had they hit me... Just saying'.

There are a few safety interlocks on most Yamaha street bikes.
The starter circuit will only operate if:
the bike is in neutral and the neutral light indicates this OR
if the bike is in gear (or neutral light not showing) you must have the clutch pulled in and the sidestand must be up (there is a clutch lever switch and a sidestand switch )
The engine stop switch "kill switch" on right handlebar has to be in the RUN position to allow starter cranking.

It'll work just fine. 8 miles isn't that far, and you're not racing.

Depend on the make and model of the mower....the safety switches usually are the seat, pto, shift lever, brake and clutch. If any of these are bad...the switch won't work. Can you cross the starter and have it start? With these safety switches....you can't just disconnect them to bypass. Most require a loop and running a wire from one side of the switch to the other will usually help you find the one causing the issue.

The solenoid comes in about 4 different models. Some ground to the frame and some don't. Not all key switches are the same either...we stock over 25 different switches and I could show you 7 that look identical but are different.

Personally I would start testing from the starter and work my way back...starter, solenoid, safety switches, starter switch. www.nnyparts.com

My friend, a motorcycle is not a Toyota pick up. Don't even try to fix it at this point of your motorcycle career.

By nature, air cooled engines have a wider range of normal operating temperatures. Even if your bike has a radiator, it is still more motorcycle engine than automotive engine.

Since this is your first bike, I recommend two things for you. First, seek out a Motorcycle Safety Training Course, such as the BRC from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Yea yea, I know, you know how to ride and maybe you do. If you take the course, you may get some good tips and probably a discount on your insurance. Second, take your bike to the Suzuki dealer and have them go over the bike mechanically for you to make sure all is up to snuff on your 11 year old bike. Get a tune up and ask the mechanic about your bike. What to lube, where the oil goes etc. You should become very good friends with your new motorcycle - believe me when I say - it is a far cry from driving any other kind of vehicle.

Your investment of $ and time spent with the mechanic and your BRC instructor will pay dividends for many years to come. Good riding to you my friend. Enjoy your new motorcycle and ride safe.

you could splice the wires and by pass the switch all together.

Make sure the control arms are all the way out, the brake is locked in the on position. There are safety switches on each control arm and one on the brake lever, also there is a safety switch on the seat...if either is faulty the mower will not key start.

as far as i know, in the UK you can now ride any motorcycle up to 125 cc there are rules according to age and horsepower, when i lived there i had to do my cbt ( i used the schools 125) then as i was over 21 i took the direct access course, which depending on your riding skills is a 3 to 5 day course followed by the full license test, all taken on a 500cc bike. then if you pass you can ride anything..

in the USA, well here in Massachusetts all you have to do is take a test on a computer and get 14 questions right outta 20, then you get a learners licence and you can ride anything you damn well want...... can you believe that... so stupid
