Our bike has recently had problems, and not wanting to start every time. It's "when the starter button is pushed" that we hear like a whirring sound, before it starts...or,if it starts. This does not happen every time; sometimes it starts right up perfectly. Had bike at the shop, and they checked starter and said it tested fine...got bike back, and the noise is still there...any ideas?
Sounds like the starter bendix is not engaging the flywheel every time. This will have that whirring sound as the teeth are just outside the flywheel gears.
The starter may test fine but if it is out of alignment just slightly the gears may not be engaging the flywheel. The random whirring may not have happened at the shop. (Thing works fine when you take it to be repaired) :)
Usually adjusting with small washers or shims will often remedy this. But you have to be careful = small changes only!
Check the flywheel and starter bendix FIRST to make sure there are no broken/worn gears.
Hopefully your not hearing that whirring noise then a metal to metal grinding noise. That would be bad.
Good luck!
Sounds like the starter clutch is slipping and or beginning to fail. You should take it back and have them inspect the starter clutch for scoring or damage.
