Why does fuel run out the overflow tube from the carb? And where is the darn spark plug located?

Float is suck or misadjusted. if you cant find a spark plug you have no business working on a bike

If your carb is overflowing, there is a definitely a problem somewhere around the floats. The float is designed to maintain the proper level of fuel in the bowl. If the float sticks, or the needle valve doesn't seat properly, you will have a carb overflow.

If you are saying the fuel is leaking out of the carb overflow tube it would likley be that the float and/or needle and seat are stuck or defective

For your dirt bike to run you need 3 things:

1. Fuel (gas/air)
2. Compression
3. Spark

Start trouble shooting through these. Make sure your gas is turned on, and that it flows through the carb; if you tilt the bike does fuel run through the overflow tube in the carb? Make sure you have good spark; take out the spark plug from the cylinder, still connected to the ignition wire touch the threaded end to somewhere metal on the engine and turn the bike over. You should see a spark. Finally, do you have good compression, how hard is it to kick over etc.

These are the first things to trouble shoot, I would look on youtube if you don't know what you're doing, there are plenty of helpful videos there. You can also try putting a thimble full of fuel into the cylinder and then kick it over to help it start if it has been sitting a while.

Petrol pissing out through air box bike not starting


hi, you dont say what bike this is, however the main reason for this would be at least 1 float valve not closeing, has the bike stood for a while, classic symptom, reason for not starting would be overfueling, normaly you will find a drain screw on each carb with a pipe for fuel to overflow, this would then be oviouse which carb is giving the problem as the fuel flows out of the problem carb overflow, your overflow tubes which are located inside the float chamber may be blocked, i would think that in this case a strip down of the carbs to check and clean as ness would be in order, in the same way the fuel will run out through the airbox it will also run into the engine, causing it not to run

Sounds like you have a stuck float needle in the carbs (2). Usually after a few days with gas in the carb they will free up, you could 'knock' on the carbs with the plastic end of a screwdriver to help free them up. If not, turn off fuel, drain the carbs and fill them with carb cleaner for 24 hours. Redrain, attach fuel lines and turn the gas back on. If still no start it's time for a rebuild...

I have a 2008 Wildfire Scooter 150cc. The carburator has an overflow tube coming out the bottom and gas just pours out of it when I try to start it. I have check all the tubes and the spark plug they seem...


My 150 carb has the same overflow and is stop by a needle vale screw is it there or missing replace the screw and it should run or plug the hose so it can not run out of the carb.

You may wnat to inspect the intake manifold/boot that mounts inbetween the cylinder and the carb. Also, the impulse tube that comes from the bottom of the cylinder to the carb manifold or carb itself. Sounds like you are running a lean condition. You need to locate the source very quickly, or continued operation will permantly damage the saw. I have listed a few other things to check.

Basics to check:
1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled (black and carbon deposits)
b) is there spark

2) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated
3) Check cylinder compression

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Chain Saws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks
*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

I had the same problem - actually more than one problem:
1) Floats in the carburetor bowl (at the bottom of the carb) are getting stuck. Remove the carb; carefully disassemble the bowl & float assembly (pay attention to gasket orientation and don't lose the needle valve that the float-tab presses on!); use a carb cleaner from AutoZone or similar, and a toothbrush to clean all the parts. If carb is not too dirty, leave the jets and mixture-adjust screws alone (otherwise will have to re-adjust later).

2) Overflow tube is plugged (hence fuel in the cylinder instead of on the ground). Clean both ends of the brass-looking tube from inside and outside the carb bowl. Make sure you can blow through it or it is still plugged. Toothbrush and carb cleaner should do the trick. Replace the short flexible tubing that connects to the overflow on the outside of the bowl - transparent polyurethane tubing is less than $1 per foot at your local ATV/motorcycle shop.

3) Air Vent tube is plugged. Same thing as the Overflow tube but mounted higher up in the carb (not in the bowl). Clean it the same way and replace the flex tubing with another short piece of polyurethane.

4) Make sure the float-tab and needle-valve move smoothly. Mine was catching and getting stuck so I carefully "polished" the face of the tab with 400-grit emery paper, and then made sure to clean the area from grit. Smooth as a hot knife through butter now.

5) Set the float level by CAREFULLY bending the tab that pushes on the needle valve. On my 1981 175MX, float height spec is 21mm when just making contact with the needle. Yours may be different though.

6) Reassemble the carb after making sure all dirt and debris are gone. Use a new bowl gasket or at least put a good gasket-sealer compound on the old gasket. Attach the short lengths of transparent polyurethane tubing to the Overflow and Air Vent. When installing the carb, the Air Vent tube should just be 2" long and point out to the side; the Overflow tube should route through the frame near the swing-arm and point down to the ground.

7) MAKE SURE the Oil Feed tube coming from the AutoLube oil pump is connected to the carb (brass-looking fitting toward the cylinder-end). I replaced mine with transparent polyurethane tubing (different size than the Air Vent and Overflow), so now I can see that oil is being presented to the carb!

8) If the carb was nasty-dirty, you may need a new air filter. Mine was disintegrating. I recommend also putting an in-line fuel filter between the petcock and the carb, again using short lengths of TRANSPARENT polyurethane tubing (so you can see that fuel is flowing). You may also need to adjust & prime the AutoLube oil pump.

I highly recommend getting a Clymer manual (check eBay) which shows all these procedures and gives you the right specs for float height, etc. based on your model / year.

Gas leaking from hose that is under tank that is not for gas flow


is it an overflow from the carb? gas will only be in one of 2 tubes and they are the fuel line from the tank and the carb over flow. unless you have an electronic fuel pump then tubes go from tank to pump to carb. if its coming from the overflow then you are getting too much fuel into the carb float chamber. you may have a sticky float. thy getting some Berrymans B12 fuel additive and putting double the doseage in the tank. run engine til hot then leave it to stand overnight. this should break down any gum/varnish that has built up in the system

has this been in storage thru winter?
