I have a Brute Force 750, starts OK but runs rough after a few minutes, will start smoking a smelly black/gray smoke, and most recently some blue smoke.


When the head gasket fails on a liquid (water) cooled engine the typical smoke colour is white (steam) and that becomes rather underlined by the steady drop of the coolant level and often clear evidence combustion gas is leaking into the cooling system.

Smelly black/grey smoke tends to be produced by an over-fuelling condition such as a stuck choke or strangler or other cold starting aid or perhaps carburettor flooding.

Blue or blue/grey smoke is invariably engine oil burning but I suggest you ignore that until the black smoke problem is rectified and after a short time the blue smoke might also disappear. If it doesn't it could be related to the overheating but the black smoke probably wasn't caused by that...

No that is either poor ring seal or loose valve guides, you need to rebuild the engine most likely.

My honda acty 1988 sometimes wont start and other times it starts 1st or second time.


If all tune up items are good, you may have a weak coil, bad ignition module, failing fuel pump, etc. Run tests when failing, such as fuel pressure, spark check for nice fat blue spark, compression test. Are valves set correctly? Has engine got high miles?

What could be the issue?


Most electrical appliances are fitted with a device to prevent them emitting radio frequency interference. Some such devices do not age well or resist spikes or surges in the supply.

The problem could be with that device. I notice they tend to produce white smoke when they fail, whereas wiring and motors, switches and suchlike tend to produce an altogether darker and more acrid smoke.

1. COLORLESS OR SLIGHTLY BLUE SMOKE on start-up means your air/fuel mixture is at the right composition and everything is well burnt in your combustion chamber.

I just rebuilt the carbs on my 1982 goldwing interstate and now it is blowing white smoke out of the right side exhaust

I have a 1992 honda prelude. During a hard acceleration, the car fails to accelerate. Instead, it produces rough sound as if it is not getting a consistant amount of fuel. Slow acceleration is OK. Also...


Check for free play on distrubtor.
If you has a known good disturbutor then do the swap.

===== Lite white smoke during warm up is OK.
If the white smoke is still noticable after 15 minutes of start up then you should start monitor the coolant level and oil level.
If the temp. is raising then it can be stage one of blown headgasket.

Keep track of the temp. and make sure the oil is not getting a white/creamy texture.
DO NOT drive it if it's overheating.
