To change the switch, first unplug the wires at the switch. Screw the old switch out and install the new switch into the tee connector. Do not depress either brake lever while the switch is out. Tighten the switch and reconnect the wires.

Usually you don't have to bleed any air out of the brake system but check the rear brakes for proper operaion. If the rear brake pedal goes too far down, bleed the brakes at the rear caliper. Make sure you don't run the rear brake master cylinder dry while bleeding the rear brake. Use only the approved type of brake fluid, do not mix the different types of fluid. Make sure the rear brakes are working properly before riding the bike.

THIS IS A PRESSURE SWITCH IN THE REAR BRAKE LINE...JUST FOLLOW THE LINE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE BLOCK CONNECTING THE LINES. YOU WILL SEE A ROUND UNIT WITH 2 WIRES COMING OUT OF IT. PULL THE WIRES OFF AND LOOSEN THE SWITCH WITH THE RIGHT SIZED WRENCH. THIS LINE WILL BE UNDER PRESSURE, SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO BLEED THAT OFF TO AVOID A BIG MESS. AFTER INSTALLING THE SWITCH...BLEED THE REAR BRAKE. YOU CAN GET THIS SWITCH FROM J&P CYCLES ONLINE OF AT YOUR LOCAL HD DEALER...

Hi, Derrill you need to check the ignition switch for continuity in all positions with a test light or multimeter the accessory circuit energizes the speedometer backlight, rear tail light, brake light, and horn only if none of these components are working in the accessory switch position check the accessory fuse. For this scenario, you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the best tool you ever bought for your Harley, despair not, for a mere $7 you can download another one. 2007 Harley Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom rear brake light not working

Hi, Patrick before diagnosing any brake light issue always check the bulb and fuse first for integrity a brake light staying on is usually caused by the front brake light switch, which is mechanical, not disengaging. On early models moving the throttle control housing closer to the front brake master cylinder is the main fix. On late models, the switch gets tweaked and needs to be realigned. A brake light that does not come on when the brake lever is applied can be caused by a faulty switch or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. The rear brake light switch is hydraulic and it is extremely rare to malfunction in a closed circuit condition causing the brake light to stay on. Usually, rear brake light switch issues are caused by no brake pedal free play or a sticky rear master cylinder piston. A brake light that does not come on when the rear brake pedal is depressed can be caused by a faulty switch, air contamination in the brake line, or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. Finally, most tail light wiring harnesses run under the rear fender held in place by spot welded clips. Worn out rear shocks or lowered suspension can bottom out causing the rear tire to come in contact with the wiring harness, rubbing the insulation off, exposing the bare metal inner core, allowing it to break or short out.

Rear foot break switch

Late model Harley's have been having a problem with the rear brake light switch.
Replace.

A quick test is to unplug the two wires from the brake light switch, and jump them together with ignition on and see if the brake light illuminates.

Rear brake light does not work when I apply the front brake

It's the brake light switch.
Sometimes it gets gummed up, or it just goes bad.

Figure yours has been in use for a decade, so you might need to change it.

Tail light and foot pedal brake light does not work but hand lever brake light works.

Probably a bulb/ rear brake switch combination. If your front brake switch is working, then half of the bulb is working. No taillight issue, probably a bulb. No rear brake light, probably the rear brake switch. Located on the lower right rear of the frame, behind the exhaust. Check for power on the orange/white wire at switch. If you have that then check for power on the other terminal of the switch while pushing on the pedal. The rear brake switch is hydraulically operated so you must have adequate pressure to activate it.
