Well what you need to do is take volt meter and start the bike see if you are getting 13,5 volts at battery or more if not hold throttle at 1500 rpm and see what you have if you do not have this volts coming to battery it could voltage regulator or stator is bad but check all grounds to bike and wiring hope this helps

Ktm 400 battery won't keep it's charge

Sounds like your stator is shot. That usually happens when you run it with a dead battery. Stator over works

My battery wont stay charged?

It may be worth checking the battery itself, charge it off the bike, leave for 24hrs. Reconnect to the charger and check that the reading was the same as when you charged it. If it takes another top-up charge, the battery maybe at fault.

My battery wont charge and I just bought it

Hi and welcome to FixYA,

Two possibilities:
  • rectifier / regulator combo (most likely);
  • corroded, burned, loose connection from the stator to the regulator (likely);
  • faulty stator (least likely).
The stator would be producing relatively high AC voltage while revving the bike. The stator output AC voltage are fed to the rectifier / regulator through 3 white wires. Check calls for testiing for the presence of the AC voltage on any pairing of the white wires before and after the connector before the voltage regulator. Check on the regulator calls for checking the battery voltage when revving the bike (14.5 VDC).

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My suzuki drz 400 seems to drain the battery and and wont keep any sort of charge, ive even bought a couple new batteries and had the same problem

check that all the wire connections are good, start at the 3 stator leads and follow it to the rectifier and to the battery, also if you have a multimeter, rev the bike up to 3000 revs and hook up the multimeter to the battery (positive to positive and neg - neg), this will give you the charging voltage, should be between 13-15 volts dc, if its not, it could be a bad stator, but is more likely to be the regulator rectifier unit

Bike shut down. found out battery was dead. replaced battery didnt last one hour before the new one was dead. whats my problem?

You have either got a bad generator (Stator) or wiring problems. Check to make sure all connections from Stator to Regulator and regulator to battery are good, Not corroided, or burnt. Check to make sure your Ground wire from battery to engine block it good! If all connections are good then the Stator is Bad! Testing the Stator is easy! With the new battery Charged up and all wires have be checked as stated above. Start Engine and let idle, Take a Volt meter on DC setting and place one lead on positive side of battery and Black on Negative see what the meter reads. Now with it still hooked up (Meter) Rev engine up and see the reading now! If the meter shows a discharge when you rev it up the Stator is Bad. If it shows over 16 volts the regulator rectifier is bad and needs replacing. It would be overcharging and burning or shorting out your Batteries! If it reads 14.5 to 15.5 volts it is Normal and most likely your New battery is Bad Take it back! Hope this is some help to you! Rick

Battery will not stay charged ,bought new one i started motor & disconected battrey, motor kept running ,what keeps battrey charged ?

If your charging system is working, you can disconnect the battery while it's running, and it will stay running. The stator assembly (Like a car alternator) will supply the current to keep the bike running along with charging the battery. A multi-meter should show around 12.5 volts at the battery with the engine off, and just under 14 volts running, under normal working conditions.

Harley davidson 2002 1200cc sportster dead battery

Check the stator and regulator and make sure it is not over charging the battery and therefor burning it up. Should be putting out 12 - 14 volts
