On my Harley 1200 Sportster Custom 2005 the oil filler cap does not twist fully and sit securely leaving a small opening. After a short ride I notice oil running down the side of the oil tank?? Why

Your oil will expand and push out of the oil tank if the cap is not sealed. That is why there is an o-ring on the cap. You must have it sealed in order to keep oil from leaking out of it.

2005 Harley Sportster Custom , oil tank cap leaks until tank is half a quart low ,could o-ring need replaced it is loose .

If the tank cap is loose, you need to get a new seal or simply replace the entire cap. There are two marks on the dipstick. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not add oil to the tank when the oil is cold. As long as there is oil on the stick, ride the bike until it comes to operating temp and then add any oil if it needs any. This is a common mistake on the Sportsters. If you bring the oil up to the top mark when cold, it'll expand and blow the tank cap out and make a big mess. Do not overfill the tank but if the tank cap is loose, replace it.

Good Luck

How do you remove the oil tank cover on a 2005 Harley Sporster 1200 XL Custom?

Pull on the bottom of the cover until it pops loose then lift the cover off its two top pins. May have to remove seat to lift off two top pins.

Where is the gearbox oil filler on a 2005 Sportster XL 883L

The bike has a wet clutch, it uses the engine oil to lubricate the motor, transmission, and cool the clutch.

OxyClean in the gas tank?

Maybe being that he was a "Stortster rider" that's why he used it? I wouldn't put anything like that in the tank. No telling what results you may get when it contacts the parts in the system. Possible he was pulling your leg?

Oil drain plug

Follow the hose that goes to the frame from the oil tank. Loosen the clamp and pull.
