Here's a few things to check :
Press down on the kick start to check compression of the engine.
Check oil. If the oil on the dipstick is milky, water gets through to the oil somewhere.
If a engine is in a good condition, it would start easily.
Check if it idles smoothly and without any knocking noise like metal hammering or bearings.
Tires, shocks, brakes, chain, sprockets.
Check for any oil or water leaks underneath the engine.
