Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Sounds like a very lean mix; confirm by checking the sparkplug tips. If the burn is very light brown to almost whitish, then it would be lean - too much air, too little fuel. Check for an air leak in the air filter box/enclosure. This would also happen if the air filter has been replaced with an aftermarket free breather (like K & Ns) or the exhaust has been replaced and no jettings done.

Postback results of initial checks.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

SOURCE: 1996 Suzuki Savage 650 backfires on cutoff

I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.

Hi when i start my 650 savage & leave it ticking over the manifold glows red hot & then changes to a purple colour is this the norm! rgds steve

The exhaust manafold should NOT glow red, check for intake manafold leak, this can cause a lean running condition and can lead to severe engine damage.

Need to change spark plug and do not have manual...how do i get to the plug...also backfires when i shut it off

pull the gas tank off to get to the plugs, be very careful pulling the plug wires loose, they are easily damaged, as far as the backfiring goes is the idle speed to high?
