Keihin CVK-D36 carbs on a 20 yr old ZZR 600 motorcycle. Bike starts fine on choke and idles ok when warm. The engine revs up fine on the choke. As soon as the throttle is twisted the engine stalls. The bike starts again instantly on a closed throttle. Where do I start?

It sounds like your bike has been sitting in storage for an extended period of time (a year or more) - and the carburetors are plugged up. If this is the case, they will need to be completely disassembled and cleaned out.
If it hasn't been sitting (and the carbs aren't plugged up) then check that all of the normal tune-up items have been performed, especially valve adjustment, oil and filters, spark plugs, etc. If this fails to produce positive results, perform a compression check on the engine. Each cylinder must be able to produce at least 140 psi of compression in order to run and idle properly.

If it's fine on choke you've probably got mixture screw issues. They get cakes up very easily. Sounds like you're starved of fuel. I had the same issue. Drop the mixture screw from #1 carb completely. Watch ya get the spring washer n O ring. Check for signs of stale fuel oxidation etc Put your finger over the entry for the screw and start the bike. You'll probably get an increase in revs because yer now running a mixture that is really rich providing the jet isn't blocked. Drop your finger and listen for a change. If there's no change, poke out the jet with a really fine E string off a guitar. It's a bit fiddly but worth the effort. Repeat the test. Try this in #2 carb n covering both holes, ya can do it with one hand. If things improve again you've got your answer. Ya really need to drop the carbs n do a proper clean. Also, check the 2 brass pipes at the rear aren't blocked( guitar string it). A big syringe n some 6mm plastic tube are really handy for blowing through that idle jet through n the brass airways.
Before ya replace the idle screw remove all traces of scale n polish very very lightly with Autosol or such so they have a shiny surface again or just replace. Hand/easy adjust screws might be an idea. Hope this helps

Sorry To check this out get the bike ready and warmed up. Start out normal and when it starts loosing power choke the thing a little. and increase choke until it runs "stronger" if this works then the carbs are stopped up. Main jets

Hi, my zzr 250 hadn't been started for about 8 months, so it fired up nicely with the choke on but once the bike warmed up I couldn't get it to idle once the choke was off, i tried more air to the carby...

Could be one of two things
1. The carbs are gummed up. Modern fuel will break down after only a few months. The idle jets are quite small and will easily become blocked. Strip and clean the carbs.
2. The throttle cable is sticky. Less likely, but possible. Make sure it opens and snaps shut easily.
What do you mean when you say you tried more air?

My cbr 600 f2 1993 had been sitting for a long time

Sounds like the carbs were not properly cleaned or set up. Choke should cause the cold start rpms to be higher than what you are experiencing. Application of choke to a warmed up engine will usually cause the engine to stall.

If your bike has ever sat for more than a few months at any time, the carburetors could be plugged with gasoline residue. If so, they will need to be disassembled and cleaned.
Otherwise, make sure all of the normal tune up items have been performed; valves adjusted, air filter, spark plugs, etc. And make sure there are no air leaks between the carburetors and the engine.
Finally, if the above things are all good, then I would perform a compression check. With the throttle held wide open, you should see at least 140psi of compression, on every cylinder. Anything lower than that will cause an erratic idle quality and overall poor performance.

What would cause hanging revs/RPMs when the engine is warm? It's a stock 2000 katana 600 with 14k miles. The revs don't hang when the engine is cold.

sounds to me like your carbs may need cleaning and or a rebuild, i had a 750 katana that would do that as well, didnt want to idle when cold, then too fast when warm/hot, gave my carbs a good cleaning and it cleared up, the jets can get plugged really easily, could also be bad gas, any contamination and or particles can cause problems, especially if the bike sits without running for too long, hope this helps =)
