You do not need to adjust valves on a stock 2006 Sportster. These are hydraulic.

Check your batt connections perhaps it become loose due to the motor vibration...Also check your Negative cable from the Batt to the frame ground....

My 2006 hd 1200L quit like it was out of gas but it had a full tank. I checked for spark - ok. What could be the problem?

It sounds like it may have flooded or your timing might be off. I would start with the flooding first. Let the bike see for a 30 minutes and try again. If it works and dies out, have the trottle leaned a bit. If thats not the issue try retiming the bike.
