When you push the brake pedal down the pedal goes

When you push the brake pedal down, the pedal goes down further than the next time and a little less the third time, it seems that you have to pump it 3 times to get really good pedal. New pads were installed and the brake line was bleeded to check for air.

    If you google this you will find this is a common problem for Lincoln MKZ and Ford Fusion, once you change the brakes there is pedal issues. My mkz has a good pedal until you start the engine then it almost goes to the floor it started out having to pump a few times to where it is now. According to the ford dealership there is a valve sticking open in the power booster. It is inactive when the engine is not running that is why I get a good pedal when they are bled with the engine off. Then when you start it not so good . Mine have been bled about three time so I know it is not that.

Run the engine for one or two minutes, and then stop it. Depress the brake pedal several times at normal foot pressure. If the pedal goes down further at the first time, but gradually rises after the second or third time, the brake booster is functioning properly.

It is a nomral condition, in every vehicle the break paddle is hard to push before you turn the engine on. But, if you turn the engine on the paddle would go soft.

Brake lights do not turn off. Hazards do not flash
There is a brake light safety switch that is located right behind the arm on your brake pedal. Meaning when you push the brake pedal with your foot there is an arm attached to it that goes up from the pedal. When the brake pedal is pushed it pushes a button on a little box there. If you loosen the bolt on the box ther is a little adjustment in it. If you move it away from the brake pedal arm it will make it so your brake lights will go off when the brake pedal is released. There is also a fuse that controls the flashers. One in the fuse box by the glove compartment and a flasher fuse down in the kick area by the pedals to run the car. It is usually round and silver. They are usually bigger around than a quarter. Hope this helps.

hissing sound is a vacuum leak somewhere on the power assist part of the system as in a bad booster..try this test..with the car off..push the brake pedal down a few times and release all the vacumm and see how far the pedal goes down..after a few pumps with your foot it should become hard and drop just a bit..once it feels"solid' or hard..hold the pedal down with moderate pressure.. and start the car back up..the pedal should drop a bit further but less than halfway.. if it drops further it needs attention..good luck especially if it goes almost to the floor..

Brake pedal drops very low on first press only
It is most likely you have air in the brake fluid. The first press of the pedal compresses the air and the effect lasts for a little while.
Another cause may be warped (bent) rotors, the pads can be pushed back into the calipers by the off center area of the rotor. This means that the pads have to travel further in order to contact the rotors when you press the pedal.

You can check to see if your brake booster is airtight. Start your truck, let it run for a couple minutes then shut it off. Push your brake pedal down a few times it should get harder to push every time you push it. Also press pedal down while engine is running then stop the enginewith the pedal still pressed down. If the pedal doesn't move after being held for a second after the vehicle has been shut off, then your booster is airtight. If your truck passes these tests then thats probably not your problem. It depends here...if the pedal goes all the way down when you brake then it will need further bleeding.Now it also depends if there is enough pressure from the master cylinder.

The brake lights stay on. When I remove the fuse they turn off. What can I do to fix the problem?
I had the same problem. In my case it was not the brake pedal switch contact which I replaced anyways as it is very inexpensive on Autozone. Your brake pedal makes contact with this switch with a round little plastic piece and when this piece breaks after many years of use, the hole left on the break pedal does not push the contact switch thus your brake lights stay on. Go to a Nissan dealer PARTS and tell them your problem. The solution is less than $2 and even though is a little hard to fix, you will be happy when you are done.

Hint: Push the brake pedal as you are installing this little plastic thingie.
