Gsxr will not start spark at plugs but can hold my hand against plug, not too painfull when turning over?from what i remember, spark should hurt like hell, right?anyway, have been told several poss probs, coil, cdi, stator, etc.anybody got any cast iron ideas?thanks, rob
How we feel spark has most to do with skin type than voltage. color of spark is a little helpfull shound be blue to white. has the bike been in storage? set the plug gap and try a little starting fluid.
Testimonial: "ok spark seems good white blue colour, now im trying to remove carbs to check them.no room at all to remove them>is this normal?thanks for advice"
Yes the carbs are very tight, but you can spray a little in the air box also while you crank the motor, just dont go over board. if it wants to fire up and run on the starting fluid, your gonna have to pull those carbs and clean-em out.Yes the carbs are very tight, but you can spray a little in the air box also while you crank the motor, just dont go over board. if it wants to fire up and run on the starting fluid, your gonna have to pull those carbs and clean-em out.

one thing you may try is to change the plug out with another one. small engine like mower and such are bad for just not starting because of the plug. even if you hold the plug to the frame and see spark sometimes the plug will not fire in the compression of the cylinder. nd that is one test of course is to hold the plug against the frame on the blower and pull the cord and see if you see spark in the gap of the plug. don't hold the plug in your hand and your hand against the frame unless you like the shop the magneto provides. that can be illuminating at best.
one more thing is to actually look at the plug and make sure it is not fouled out with carbon or oil! good luck
unscrew spark plug . plug cap back on and hold it against engine and pull cord. plug should give healthy blue spark. if orange the little elbow contact on bottom of plug should be adjusted by tapping it lightly to close the gap between electrodes. do not hold plug by its body when pulling starter rope or ignition. if u can smell petrol on plug then ur engine is flooded.
you will have to check a few things to diagnose it:
1) check the spark plug. check it for spark with a spark tester (best way) or by holding it against the engine metal somewhere and give a pull to see if you see a spark. If no spark go to #3 else go to #2.
2) if you have spark, you need to see if it turns over. get some starting fluid and just give it a quick spray in the intake (air filter usually) to the carburator. try starting it fairly quickly before the spray evaporates. If the engine turns over, then you have a carburator, fuel or fuel tank problem.
3) if you have no spark, replace the spark plug. if you still have no spark likely you need a new starter coil.
Remember you could have a combination of both of these types of problems.
have u tried a new plug ? is power gettin to coil , put plug in cap and hold against a good earth point on head and crank over and see if plug sparks , if you dont see a spark try holding the plug and crank engine and if you dont feel voltage in your hand then remove cap off ht lead and repeat and if no voltage then check kill switch , if ok then check coil wires etc !
Is your choke working OK?..is there a spark at plugs take a lead of and put a good plug in the cap hold the plug against metal block to see if a spark is present use gloves or a pair of pliers to hold plug or u will get a big shock, this will olso check ur leads check each one in turn ,the firing order chud be in hand book
can you hold the metal part of the clip that clips on the spark plug an 8th of an inch from the spark plug while the spark plug is in place and try to start it and look or have a friend look and see if when your trying to start it can you see a spark sparking inbetween the space between the topside of th spark plug and the metal part of the sparkplug wire ? if you see a spark then its not electrical its probably a fuel flow issue or mabey a carburator issue,, anyway thats a way to eliminate variouse issues.. thanks,..
Well first you have to determine is it fuel or spark loss.first remove one spark plug reinsert in plug boot, with insulated gloves or rubber handled plyers hold sparkplug conneted to wire against the head of bike.Ignition on kill switch in run position (disconnect all other plug wires in case it starts).hit starter and you should see a nice crisp blue spark. If nothing you have a ignition problem most likly a bad coil or cdi box.if you have spark repete on all other cyclenders to make sure all electrical circuts are working.also take note as you remove all spark plugs are the wet with gas,if there dry you have a fuel problem.
Take out spark plug Put cap on spark plug Hold spark plug by spark wire Put spark plug threads against edge of hole where spark plug came out. Metal to metal. Pull start cord. Look for spark between metal No spark, then you need new spark coil from small engine repair shop
Take the spark plug out, reconnect the coil wire, and hold the spark plug against the engine block while turning over the engine. You should see a spark across the gap of the spark plug. Use leather, thick dry cloth, or rubber gloves, dry newspaper, or rubber handled pliers to hold the plug or you might get zapped. Or you could play a mean trick on a friend and let them hold the plug while you crank it and watch them jump and cuss. Don't forget to run like h***. Does the engine crank over but does not start or is it not turning over?
Are you getting any fire? You may check this by removing one spark plug and putting the plug wire on the plug. Then touch the end of the plug to ground, set it against the engine block or valve cover. Have someone turn the engine over while you watch the end of the plug to see if there is a spark. Remember do not hold the plug or wire because you will get shocked.
