Hi - I'm in the midwest - below zero for a few days now - rear hatch on my 08 XL7 won't open. When I press the rubber-covered release switch on the tailgate (above the license plate holder) it doesn't make the usual "click" sound. I ran a hair dryer on it for a few minutes to be sure that all moisture was removed and it was thawed. I pounded on the inside while my wife tried pushing the button. I pounded on all of the edges (inside and out). I don't think it's frozen shut. I checked the fuse and it is not blown. The rear wipers work, rear washer works, and rear defroster works. The indicator light that tells if a door / hatch is open doesn't come on when the car is running. Any ideas?
I was able to get the fingertip pad out of the liftgate by removing the two screws which hold it to the body of the liftgate. Once you detach the clip for the wiring harness, the rubber pad comes right out. Remove all 5 or 6 of the little screws to expose the inner workings. I then just used to solder to join the corroded parts which fell off long ago and it works fine. Here's a lousy picture! 2008 SUZUKI XL7 LIFTGATE
