Yes - the stator will be in an area on the left hand side (if sitting on bike) behind the crankcase cover - there is a grommet where the wiring harness exits the crankcase cover to prevent any of that oil from exiting the crankcase - I've personally taken a few of the Yamaha's apart and can assure you that it is definitely in the lubrication area and that is normal - I have a '96 Yamaha Wolverine 4wd, a ,98 Yamaha Timberwolf and a '99 Yamaha Bear Tracker - and have rebuilt them personally to one degree or another.

07 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4. How can I replace the stator and flywheel without using special tools?

You need the special tool... it is designed to prevent damage to anything else and get it off quickly, Do your self a favor, get one or take it to the dealer and pay them to pull it.. if you break something.. OUCH,,, all that stuff is VERY EXPENSIVE!!

Smack the starter with a hammer or a wrench if the starter isn't turning over then it's bad if it does crank and won't start your CDI may be bad you've all ready replaced the little stuff sounds like it your starter is bad hope it not CD I if it is replace the stator as well and buy them on ebay it will save you a ton of money

Sounds like you will need to extract both parts of the broken shaft and replace with a new one.
