Hi, the problem you are having could be down to a couple of things the first and most likely would be that the clutch needs replacing so this would need checking, the problem could also be either the master or slave cylinder on the hydraulic clutch, but my best guess would be your clutch needs replacing.

if the clutch pedal goes to the floor and stays their when you take your foot off the pedal then this indicates are problem with either of the clutch slave or master cylinders but if the clutch pedal comes up on its own then this indicates the clutch needs replacing.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

hi, glad you got it sorted, i had a feeling it was one of the cylinders as this is a know problem with cars of that age.

Thanks for using fixya, pass the site onto friends and family as we have experts in everything you can think of so if anybody has any problems send them to fixya, you dont have to pay for premium post you can post the problem for free, but they dont always get answered so quickly so it can take a couple of weeks for an expert to work through the free posts as their are loads and loads of them.
posting a premium problem puts your problem at the front of the queue so it gets answered more or less at once.

Any way thanks again for using the site.

Clutch pedal won't engage 2001 sunfire

Without more information it's going to be hard to answer the question. What exactly is the clutch pedal doing? Is it going straight to the floor and NOT coming back up? Is it going to the floor and coming back up but NOT letting the vehicle go into gear?

My clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor . Could this cause decrease in power

A clutch pedal normally does go all the way to the floor. If you can shift gear without a crunch, it is disengaging OK.

The loss of power could mean the clutch plate is worn and is slipping when engaged. There is a crude test for this. Start the engine and idle it. Apply the footbrake firmly, depress the clutch and put the gearbox in 3rd. Let the clutch out slowly. If the engine does not immediately stall, the clutch needs replacing.

Clutch not engaging

Well, it would shift easily with engine off, because the transmission input shaft is not turning. Engine running and clutch engaging good, the input shaft would again be stationary and allow smooth shifting.
What you have to determine is if the clutch disc or pressure plate is bad (a new clutch is needed), or if the pedal hydraulic system has a malfunction. When you push the pedal down, a rod from the top of pedal pushes into the clutch master cylinder bolted to the firewall under the hood. This cylinder has a reservoir filled with brake fluid. When the rod forces fluid from the clutch master down a steel line and into the clutch slave cylinder down on the transmission bell housing, the hydraulic pressure forces a plunger from the slave cylinder to extend and push the clutch fork lever a small amount, enough to force the clutch release bearing (aka throw-out bearing) against the pressure plate. This relieves pressure on the clutch disc and input shaft becomes stationary for easy shifting.

No pressure clutch pedal goes straight to the floor 1988 holden r

If hydraulic actuated mechanism, loss of fluid, defective master cylinder or slave cylinder at the clutch. Missing pin or other part between slave cylinder and clutch arm. Loose or broken slave cylinder mounting. Missing pin or broken part between pedal and master cylinder. If mechanical linkage, look for broken components or missing pins at moving joints. If you tried to shift into gear with engine running, you may have damaged the transmission gears.

Problem going into gear

Your clutch system works the same as brakes do. The necessity to bleed tells you that there is a malfunction permitting air into the system. Check where the pedal rod goes into the firewall under the dash, the line itself, and the slave unit (some are inside the bellhousing...look for fluid dripping from bottom to verify if leaking) Not unlike brake master, they can also internally bypass. If you find no leaks, change master. Bleed system and you should be fine
