1983 Honda CBX 550 F-F2 Logo

Honda CBX550 motorcycle '82 model. I purchased this bike recently and it had been sitting under a cover for nine years. I cleaned the carbies (three times now), changed the plugs, spark plug leads, main battery cables and more recently the ignition switch which died dramatically. I have put in a fuel tank liner and also an inline filter as the tank had some rust and leaks in it. I have also cleaned the petcock twice and the diaphragm appears OK. It has always had the intermittent problem of being difficult to start first up. Sometimes it will start without problem, run for 30 seconds and then stop. It will then be kick over but not fire. If left for a minute or so it might fire and run for one second or so but not restart. If left half an hour it will often start first kick and run no problems. Once running and on riding the bike it is usually flawless with 63 to 65mpg. It will start first kick once fully warm and even if it has been left for a while. Honda checked it over and fixed a problem in the kill switch wiring from the switchblock. They said the pulser was fine and coils were fine. I also cleaned the contacts on the main fuse which were slightly oxidised and the same with all the contacts and earths on the coils. Sometimes after trying to start without success if you turn the ignition on and off quickly a few times there will be backfire from a discharge to the spark plugs. I don't know if this is usual or not but it appears to be some kind of electrical problem. Today it stopped after running for 20 or 30 second three consecutive times and it's now officially driving me crazy. Can you please help Thanks Davydd

I would be looking at the battery it sounds like its not as good as you think it is,,,my honda give me lots of greef all down to the battery, and if its been standing around this long i would go around all the wireing joints cleaning every joint one at a time so you dont get lost and put some vaserlean/ petroleum jelly on every joint as for the switches get a tin of switch cleaner and give then a realy good swilling with it work in well into all the switches it has an oil in it that wont hurt any switches but it will clean and lub them
with only having 12 volts in the battery it realy dont take much of a dirty joint to stop it working it may look clean but it could still be to dirty to work well scrub the fuse box till its shiny clean then use the switch cleaner on it and after that use the pertroleum jelly on the fuses and all joints "every joint!"

Testimonial: "Thanks for the assistance. Hasn't solved the problem so maybe the ignitor or other leads are faulty to make it stop dead like a kill switch. cheers"

have a good look at the points and condencer clean and re-gap the points the condencer can only be tested by putting on another one as there any thing from + or - 50% in tolerance so testing it on a meeter is not much help, however they do "dry up" and will become intermittent if its a dud one the engine wont fire up but if its just intermittent some times the engine runs then just cuts out and wont start again this could also be fule shortage

I had a very similar issue with the same bike, and this was driving me mad too. Try this:
Buy 'Seafoam', put it in your fuel tank - about half the 16oz bottle, and keep turning over the bike. It will eventually clear out what is blocking your fuel and the bike will run. You will need to put the next half in the next tank of fuel. This stuff is amazing and can be found for sale on E-bay. No matter the cost, just get it. I tried everything else with my fuel issue and this is the only stuff that worked. All other fuel or carby cleaners just didn't cut it. Don't be concerned with the exhaust emissions, they will be all sorts of colours, but in my case it cleared out all the fuel lines and crystalisation of fuel, that builds up over time. I suspect your issue is the same!

Picked up a 82 goldwing that has been sitting up for years got it started but it's knocking and gas pouring out exhaust

Check the timing, replace the plugs. If no better check the compression of each cylinder with a compression tool that replaces the spark plug. Pull all other plugs off while cranking motor. If compression is low on one or all, a valve might be open it rings are gone. If compression is good, if a carby make sure needle if free and bowl is not fill of oil from evaporated fuel.

Adjust chain

find the tight spot in the chain, then with someone sitting on the bike, adjust it so there is no less than 1/2" of up and down movement. also measure from center of swingarm pivot and axle to make sure the wheel is straight.

Ha ha .Are you from oz?The needle and seat in the carbies are stuck open.If the bike was ok beforehand and this just happened, there is some **** caught in the n and s.If the bike was sitting for a while, pull the carb off and give it a good clean.1st thing to try is to give the carby a whack. This may unseat any small **** and/or get the n and s to reseat itself.Hope this helps

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak between the carby and the head. Check the O ring that is between the carb and manifold. Replace if it doesn't sit proud of the locating groove.

Carby problems

The gummy stuff is varnish left behind by evaporating gas from the tank. Get some Berrymans Chemtool carb cleaner. Submerse the carb parts in it and add a small air hose, like one from a fish tank, into the bottom of the carb container. The air wil provide vibration and circulation of the cleaner in the container. Let the carb soak for a couple of days. Add cleaner as needed.

My honda crf100 will not start i have change the spark plug and air filter the only way it will run is if I spray starter fluid into the carb and keep sraying it into the carb otherwise is just shuts down

it the bike has been sitting for a long period of time. the carb. can gum up. pull the carb. off. clean it up really good. insuring you get all the small ports clean. then try it again.
every dirt bike i've had requires a oil wetted air filter. dont forget about that.
