Sounds like a clutch problem to me.
So, with the engine off, can you select all gears? If yes, your gearbox is probably OK.
And now with the engine idling, can you select any gears with out crunching? If this is difficult, then try this next test in an area where movement forward or backwards won't be a problem.
With the engine OFF, foot ON the clutch, the handbrake OFF, and in 1st gear, start the car. BE READY TO TURN IT OFF.
If the car moved forward as you cranked the engine, then your clutch is not adjusted properly or has worn out. That is more-than-likely the smell you got before - burnt clutch disc from it slipping.
You can drive it, but every time you want to start off, you'll have to turn the engine off, select 1st then start the engine. Accelerate slowly, making sure the revs don't rise faster that you're speeding up, and change gear by judging engine revs between gears.
Don't keep driving it as it is, as you WILL have gearbox problems if you don't fix the clutch.

Are the counter-shaft and gears the same in a 2 wheel drive and 4x4 the same parts

no job stated, (are boxes apart?)
5speed box.

on mine , 5th gears are different ratio. OD 0.86 and 0.80
but is engine size differences not 2/4wd diffs.
the main counter shaft is totally different on 2wd, longer.
i have all p/n on both boxes.. so does suzuki.
my hands have even mixed gears. here.
if you count the teeth, you'd see in minutes
or are you shopping cases. (see how telling job first helps?)
1998 for sure has different gears, just 1.(but is engine size reasons, for OD 5th)

i dont have access to my database, im on vacation.
so can not look it up. (have full parts lists i do )

I have a 2006 Suzuki grand vitara that has got stuck in 5th gear twice. Since then it grinds when I shift it into 5th and reverse. Other gears are fine. Any ideas?

The syncros are going bad on that shaft. The 5th gear and Reverse are on the same shaft. You will have to bring it to a shop to have the parts replaced as it will only get worse.

Hi, I have a 1991 Suzuki JLX Vitara with the Front Right hub is locked into 4WD and I can seem to unlock it and the gearbox of late feels notchy, sometimes difficult to change into gear

Try hammering the front right hub with a wood or a rubber hammer while slowly reversing the vehicle, and keep on unlocking the hub while doing this.
spray it with lubrication first
yes, you need to change the gear oil in your gear box
Have your clutch re adjusted, it may be worn out , that's why you are having a hard time changing gears or have it bleed to keep the air out if you are using hydraulic.
If you dont hear any noise in your gear box while driving, its nothing serious, worst thing could be replacing your clutch lining and pressure plate.
