I have a 1995 ls 650 Savage and the Suzuki manual says, use multigrade oil SAE 10W-40 for temperatures of minus twenty up to 40 plus Centigrade,
or use 20W-50 for air temps between minus10 and 40 + Centigrade
or 10W-30 for minus 20 up to 30 Centigrade .
I live and ride in England and have ridden my Savage 8 years using SAE 20W-50 with no problems
When you check the oil level the bike must be upright not on the side stand.

1996 Savage LS 650. Why doesn't the starter disengage?

The bendix is sticky. Remove it and you will see a helix with a cog on it. clean it with gas and a brush or MAF Cleaner. Dry it and add a little light machine oil.

1996 Suzuki Savage 650, engine knocks

knocking increases with engine speed ...check for worn wrist pin to piston clearance, rod bottom bearing clearance, very unlikely the timing chain has any kinks with a chain tensioner set properly...a loose chain could make some noise so check the tension setting
