If the engine will start when starter fluid is sprayed into the carb, you missed cleaning some small orifice in the carb. Recheck/reclean the carb and you should be OK.

Most likely the carb is varnished up. Gas sitting too long will go bad and will gum up the carb jets, valve seats, etc. Rebuild the carb, and it should run. If storing for long time make sure to add fuel stabilizer to the gas, run the unit for ten minutes, shut fuel off let it run until it quits, then put in storage.

Previous owner had way overfilled crankcase oil. Oil had gotten into carb and clogged air filter. Drained oil to correct level. Ran engine but kept cutting off-see above. Took off carb cover cleaned housing and ran without air filter-ran fine. Unsuccessfully tried to clean air filter with gas-did not work. Apparently, the engine could run just long enough to exhaust the air in the old filter and cut off which is why it would start back up after a few seconds. Bought new air filter-whole thing-about $15 at Carquest. Put in some carb cleaner and installed the new filter and it runs perfectly.

Will not run with chock off cuts out

Do you mean it only runs with the choke on? If that is correct you have a lean fuel condition, dirty carbs. Your carburetors will need to be removed and cleaned.

You need a carb clean and fresh gas, with todays ethanol in fuel it causes havoc in the carb, need to pull it off and dissasebble it and clean every passage and internals then reassemble and fresh gas and you will be on your way, you may have an electrical valve on bottom of float bowl, make sure that is woeking freely be fore tearing into carb

How long did it take to do this job..did you clean the the carb first...then the oil or vise versa...the reason I as is ma y if these motors are equipped with an electric valve on the carb that go bad or stuck allowing the gas to continue flowing after shut down eventually in the intake valves and into the crankcase...causing smoke and high crankcase pressure and out the carb and exhaust...no use changing it WILL happen again..the fix is simple put an inline gas shut off and shut it off if only shut down for minutes...happened to my 18 horse Briggs...just shut it off every time you turn the engine off..Hope this helps..good luck..

unleaded fuel is notorious for going stale, and it can leave a resinous coating in the carb-try running the saw on half choke with new gas and less oil eg 50 to 1 for say ten minutes, this should clear the gunk out-if this does not work, you have two choices-strip and clean the carb,or adjust the H (high) scew on the carb anti-clockwise by a quarter turn a time till it revs out full bore-good idea to remove the chain and wear ear defenders when adjusting-and always use a chainsaw at its max rpm,or you run the risk of "kickback"
