Did you apply 12 volts directly to the starter bypassing all the other wiring? If not try that, that will tell you it's in the wiring. You did not mention if the starter spins up or not.

If the eletric start will not engage or clicks only, verify eletrical. Battery could be old.

Starter on 83 fxrt spins but wont engage

Check all your connections to starter and battery. If all connections are tight and the starter doesn't engage, it's time for a new starter.

Starter spins but won't engage

The starter on your bike uses a solenoid that also manually engages the starter gear. Try lubricating the solenoid mechanism and verify that the mechanism does not bind or stick. Once you have the mechanism freed up, check the starter again. If it does not engage, replace the solenoid (or, while you're at it, just replace the entire starter assembly).

Starting problems 2003 ultra classic

Hi,
If the starter winds and there is a clicking sound, but did not crank the engine, it means the solenoid did not engage the starter bendix gear drive to the crankshaft.
You have to pull down the starter assembly and check the parts inside. By putting a direct power to the starter you will see what's wrong w/ it.
If you have no knowledge on such repair, a technician should do the job!

Tell me if that solved your problem so that I could guide you for repairs.

Hope that helps!
