First off did you buy it new? Second has it gone through its break in tune up yet?Did you do the re jeting? My guess is it was re jeted wrong & neeeds to be re jeted again or could also need more air(upgraded air kit) or a tfi or power comand fuel mod.My bike also poped untill I did the air & fuel upgrades & them upgrades will also give you a much needed house power needed for this rig.
Bring it to a shop & have it looked at.......
Good luck

if you have any friends that weld. ive had this problem myself and have found it cheaper and less stressful to fabricate yourself than to search any further

SOURCE: How do you permanently fix the bendix starter
first off it is not a bendix starter on these bikes! there are several fixes for these starters,,, but most important is that the bike s in tune! if it has running problems with carburetor's they are hard to start anyway..
the early virago's had a gear that slides out and engages into the flywheel, there is a drag clip that forces it to slide and wears out, also if the edges of that gear round off makes it worse too

What is the background on the bike, sounds more like a carburetor problem than an exhaust issue.
