I have a 2001 rm 125 im trying to rebuild the bottom end on. Do I need a special tool to split it? i have all the bolts loose and it wont come.

Normaly you can remove the left crankcase on its own, however if it is proving difficult to split it is possibly tight in the crankshaft main bearing, you will need to remove the clutch at some point during this rebuild so do it now while you have the stability of the engine cases , undo the nut securing the crankshaft pinion on the r/ h side, the crankshaft is often easyer to remove from this bearing, also it is easyer to reasemble the engine and gearbox when previously dismantled correctly. The problem is a bent shift fork. Best to have the shop do the repair. Most riders don't have the special tools needed much less the know-how to do the repair. The entire engine comes out then gets completely torn down, top end and bottom end. The center case splits and now the mechanic has access to the gears and shift forks. You will have at least 100 parts on the work bench. This is not generally a job for the home mechanic.

there may still be something that needs to be removed from the sides. check again. if all clear, close and pull open quickly several times to pop it off

Did you check the main crank drive gear i had a 96 rm 125 with that problem. Its a cheap fix if thats the case but the only problem is that the engine needs to removed and the case needs to be be split. If thats not the problem with the case split it should be ovious.

a manual is recomended and yes you will have to split the case and remove all of your gears you will also need some special tools to pull things appart do not attempt this without a manual and make sure not to put gears in the wrong spot when reasembeling the motor, good luck I have done several main bearings in bikes I have owned over the years it is not a job for an amature mechanic. no offence
