The starter/clutch kicks when running. Went to a place to get it looked at and they said 1k to fix. Starter is good but the gears to engin are bad. Am I being taken for a ride?

G'day.
OK I think I can steer you in the right direction here!
If you go to http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=282500&category=motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2005&fveh=6848
This will take you to a web site page for access to the parts fisch for your bike.
I checked all three models of XV 1100 & the starter clutch is the same.
This system is different to the Viragos- but I've seen it before many times(on other brands & models).
If you look at the diagram that should come up with the link(if your diagram dosn't come up,select yamaha parts, your yerar, your model, select starter)
Part numbers 6 & 2 are the integral parts of the one way clutch(starter clutch).
As you can see there worth about $550 US.
Add on top an Alternator cover gasket, a flywheel removing tool & oil.
So if you were to do it yourself you stand to save a couple of hundred dollars maybe.
You would have to drain the oil, remove the L/H engine cover(alternator/stator cover)
Remove the flywheel to get access to the starter clutch to replace the two necessary parts.
I do hope that this sheds light on your problem for you.
Kind regards Andrew Porrelli

I just bought an 1987 Yamaha TT350 dirtbike. is it a 2 cycle and how do i change the kickstart shaft

Hi, a yamaha TT350 actually has a 4 stroke engine. To replace the kick starter shaft, You need to remove the crankcase cover on the kick starter side of the engine..
The clutch basket etc will then have to be removed. '
You then use a set of needle nose pliers to unhook the kickstarter return spring from its post in the crankcase.
Release the return spring and allow it to relax. Then rotate the kickstarter assembly counterclockwise by hand , and remove the shaft assembly from the crankcase. Reverse this process to refit.
You can buy cheap workshop manuals for the yamaha XT/TT 350 models. Clymer manuals make them, there are usually good second hand ones on ebay etc,
the XT/TT350 workshop manual number is
M480-3.
These workshop manuals are a "must have" when working on bikes or cars etc, and by following a manual, at least you'll know that the job has been done safely and 100% correctly.

Why isnt my kick start wrkn

You will need to remove the side cover of the gear box where the kick lever shaft goes into.
Inside you will see either a stripped gear, or a pin sheared off, or a spring out of place on the
kick starter.

Hope this helps.

2001 yamaha blaster clutch doesnt disengage and clutch cable is good and moves at the housing

Remove clutch cover and check to see if clutch is actually disengaging. Either it is not hooked up properly or it is broken.
