You never EVER connect anything directly to the generator, you connect it to the battery. On the light the black wire is the ground - connect it directly to the frame;the red one you connect it to the plus+ of the battery. Ideally you should put a simple switch on it to prevent constant use.

o.k. thanks for the info.this atv is pull start only.what is the shorter yellow and black wires off the stator for?got no battery either

Without knowing the exact model and year of the atv i can only judge by the colors - if they are standard then: yellow = + 12 v (or 6 in older ones) ;black and red = the exciter. The only way to know for sure is to put a meter on them and crank the engine.

What part of the Atv provides the power?

Usually there are three wires of the same colour, they are the stator wires.
When the engine spins the stator this produces three phase energy.
This is then rectified to produce DC voltage and used to charge the battery, if fitted and run any lights, horn etc.

Voltage regulator keeps over heating and melting on 2002 Polaris atv 4x4

sounds like something is shorted to ground probably
got a shorted stator take the three yellow wires coming
off the stator and check if any of the three are grounded out if any of them does replace stator

No spark. How do I check stator?

It is most likely not the stator
it is most likely the CDI box (black box) however to check the stator there are two or three yellow wires comming out of the stator check each of the wires with a ohm meter for continuity if any goes to ground the stator is bad but most likely it is the CDI box

No spark could it be the coil

polaris factory stator (not starter, STATOR) are junk and are prone to failure. The coil can be checked by checking the resistance with an ohm meter. To check the stator, follow the wire harness coming out of the engine by the recoil rope. Follow them to where they connect to the CDI, coil, and rectifier (should be around the headlight area, under the plastic. Remove the pair of three wires in one connector (should be a green, a red, and a red/black). Check for ohms between each. If any show open, the stator is gone. To replace, you have to remove the recoil cover, flywheel, then the stator coil comes out with four screws.

Stayter going to voltage reg 3 wires go to what on reg

The stator only has two wires if it's an original stator. The pigtail from the stator has two wires inserted into a round plug, The regulator has three wires. There should be two short wires and one long wire. Or , two smaller wires and one larger wire. The two shorter, smaller wires go to the stator, The longer, larger wire goes to the battery from the regulator.

If your stator has three wires coming out of the engine case, it is probably a 3-phase stator which is available aftermarket. It take a special voltage regulator for this type of stator. That voltage regulator will have four wires coming from it.

Good Luck

No current to the cdi box,but the light comes on when i kick it over?

if theres no current to the cdi but the light works then its either the outer coil or the stator coil is bad and the lighting coil still works.

How do you change the alternator on a 1997 honda goldwing motorcycle

hello and welcome
the alternator per say is split up into several components. the stator coil(located in the left crankcase cover) and the rectifier regulator (which is located bolted onto the frame above the stator area. you can identify this by three yellow wires going into it.
either one can be tested the regulator can be tested at a local dealership. and the stator can be tested by reading an ohm meter between either one of its three wires and ground. if any show up with any continuity between the unplugged yellow wires at the stator and ground the stator is at fault. thank you.
