Where is the Oil Drain Plug, and where is the Primary Drain Plug?

There is a small drain plug under the clutch (derby) cover. Remove the plug and the oil will drain out. Replace the plug when the primary is empty. Stand the bike upright and pour oil into the primary after removing the derby cover. Oil is at the proper level when it touches the bottom of the clutch basket.

Usually the oil drain is one the left side of the bike somewhere below the battery. Look for a hose that has a plug in it or one that connects to the frame. Harley had moved this drain so many times in the past that it's difficult to keep up with where the oil drain is located. The transmission and primary share the same oil. To drain it, find the drain plug on the bottom of the primary just below the clutch. Pour the new oil in the primary chain inspection hole of the primary.

The oil drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission as the oil tank is located there. Usually the drain plug is the one closest to the left front of the pan. Drain the oil, change the filter, and add fresh oil. To change the primary, locate the small pipe plug on the bottom of the primary directly below the derby cover and remove it. Drain the oil, remove the derby cover, and stand the bike straight up. Fill the primary with oil just until it comes up the bottom of the outer clutch drum. Do not overfill. To change the transmission lubricant, locate the pipe plug on the front of the oil pan on the bottom of the transmission. Drain the oil and refill though the plug and dipstick in the chrome release cover on the right side of the transmission. Add 20-24 ounces of oil.

If it's a 2004 1200 Evolution, it must be a Sportster. To change the oil, look on the right side of the bike below the battery tray. There is a hose with either a plug in it or it plugs onto the frame somewhere behind the primary cover. Take the clamp off and remove the plug or pull the hose off the dummy frame part and the oil tank will drain. Refill with three quarts of oil.

If you change the primary/ transmission oil. the drain is underneath the rear most part of the primary. Remove the plug and drain the primary. Refill with a quart of oil added at the primary chain inspection hole.

Yes, there is oil in primary and transmission of your Sporty. To drain the oil, look for the drain plug on bottom of rear section of the primary area, back near the large round section of the primary. Drain the oil here and replace the plug. Add the oil at the top primary chain inspection port, large plug with a large "screwdriver" slot or two small bolts in it. Add 32-36 ounces of H-D "primary lubricant for Sportsters".

Harley is notorous for changing the oil drain location and type of plug they use. On a '98 model Softail, the oil drain is a large diameter hose that runs down the frame on the right hand side just behind the transmission. It has a hose clamp on it and has a metal plug in the end of the hose. Remove the plug to drain the engine oil. If it's changed, you bike is equipped with a "horse shoe oil tank" in that the tank is shaped like a horse shoe. Look on the bottom of the tank and you'll see two hoses coming off the bottom. One is a small hose and goes to the to the forwards towards the engine. The other should be a bit larger and go downwards with a plug in the end.

There is a plug just below the chrome end cover on the right hand side of the transmission that drains the transmission. To refill the transmission, there is another plug on the chrome cover itself that takes a very large (7/16") allen wrench to remove. There is a dipstick on this plug. When you drain the transmission, refill with 20-24 ounce of H-D transmission lubricant.

The primary oil drain is located on the bottom of the primary cover at the very back. Some models screw into the out primary and some go into the inner primary from below. Either way, drain the primary and replace the plug. Remove the five bolts holding the derby cover on and fill the primary with H-D primary lubricant up to the bottom of the clutch spring. Look at the clutch assembly and you'll see the aluminum outer drum. Just inwards of that, you see a black disc. This is the diaphragm clutch spring. Fill the primary just up to this spring with the bike standing as straight up as you can safely get it. The capacity is 40-44 ounces of oil. Do not overfill or it will make your clutch drag.

Look at the bottom of the oil tank from the right side of the bike. You'll see one hose or pipe that goes downwards towards the back of the transmission. The hose will follow the frame and come out way down low on the backside of and slightly under the transmission. There is a plug in the hose or pipe. Take the plug out and the oil tank will drain.

To change the oil, drain the tank, change the oil filter, refill with three quarts of oil in the tank. You also have oil in your primary that should be changed every 5000 miles or so, and the transmission serviced at the same interval as the primary.

To drain the oil on the primary, there is a drain plug under the primary case at the very rear of the case. Remove this to drain the case. Refill the primary through the derby cover. Fill with oil until the level is just to the bottom edge of the clutch spring. 38-42 ounces of oil. Do not overfill or the clutch will drag and make finding neutral with the engine running impossible to find.

To drain the transmission, there is a small plug on the bottom side of the chrome cover on the right side of the transmission. Remove the plug, drain the tranny, and refill through the large plug that takes a hex key in the chrome cover. 20-24 ounces of transmission lube.

There are three areas that you have to service, engine oil, primary oil, and transmission.

To change the engine oil, underneath the transmission, you'll find two drain plugs. The drain plug nearest the left side of the engine is the the engine oil drain. Warm the engine a bit and drain the oil. Change the oil filter. This is a messy job so put something down to catch the oil as it runs out of the filter. Replace drain plug and refill with oil.

The plug nearest the center of the transmission is the transmission drain. Remove the plug to drain the transmission. Once drained replace the plug and refill the transmission through the transmission fill hole in the chrome cover on the right side of the transmission.

To change the primary oil, underneath the primary outer cover very near the rear of this cover is a small drain plug. It takes a Torx wrench to get the plug out. Remove the plug to drain the oil from the primary. Remove the derby cover over the clutch. Refill with oil through the derby cover hole.

Your bike probably came with H-D Syn3 oil. You can replace the oil with this or any other oil as long as it carries a rating for use in a diesel engine. Here, it must have an API code of "C", example "SJ/CG4". Four quarts of engine oil, Add three quarts of oil and check. Fill to proper level with the fourth. Your dipstick is marked with a "Full Cold" and "Full Hot" mark. Fill to "Full Cold" mark and check again after warming up the engine.

Use Syn3 in the primary or 30 weight oil, 40-44 ounces. With the bike standing nearly straight up, the fluid level should be to the bottom of the clutch spring, large black disc in the center of the clutch. It's a diaphragm type spring.


Use Syn3 in the transmission, 20-24 fluid ounces. Check with the dip stick again with the bike standing straight up.

Trans plug is under the Primary cover ( Left side ) and the Oil line is under the frame on the left side. Look for a oil line with a plug attatched to it. Run the bike up to operating temp. Primary and trans are the same thing ( Sport Trans fluid ) 1Qt in the primary ( fill throught the little cover on the side of the primary, and fill the oil through the oil tank. Put a little oil in the filter too, before installing, this will give the motor a little bit of oil until the rest of it makes it way through. You'll also need 1 p/n 11105 for the drain plug on the primary.
