Best way is to dissconect the clutch cable at the handlebar first, lossen off the adjuster on the handle bar and take the cable out of the lever. Then the cover should come straight off, should be no need to disconect the cable from the cover in order to get it off.

The timing belt can be inspected by removing the upper (front outer) timing cover.
