1997 HARLEY DAVIDSON SPORTSTER XLH 1200
STARTER REMOVAL
1. REMOVE LEFT SIDE COVER
2. REMOVE NEG. BATTERY CABLE FROM CRANKCASE TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL STARTUP
3. REMOVE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE
4. DRAIN TRANSMISSION FLUID (5/8" SOCKET)
5. REMOVE PRIMARY COVER (IF YOU'RE UNSURE OR IT'S BEEN AWHILE - PLEASE CONTACT - I CAN PROVIDE INFO)
6. REMOVE REAR EXHAUST
7. REMOVE 2 STARTER BOLTS (5/16" ALLEN)
8. REMOVE STARTER
9. REMOVE GASKET
10. SLIDE BOOT BACK AND DISCONNECT THE POSITIVE CABLE FROM BATTERY (12MM)
11. DISCONNECT STARTER SOLENOID POSITIVE LEAD TO STARTER
12. LOOSEN WIRE BAND NUTS 3/8" SOCKET

no pictures 1 remove the battery neg cable, 2 remove the primary chaincase on left side or bike it is held on with 3/16 allen bolts be ready to catch the oil thats comes out (3/4 of a quart replaces it) 3 remove the small 3/8in bolt that is in the center of the starter shaft (small gear at top of case) 4 go to other side and look at starter see the two large allen bolts at sides remove them now with a little pulling it will squeez out from under the oil tank if not loosen rear oil tank bracket that will help this should help you

With just this info.Not knowing if the engine is stock or has bigger cams or high comp pistons.I would say check the starter solenoid by running jumper wire from one side to the other.then check ALL connections for corrosion and tightness

I have a 1980's somthing 883 with a fucked up hand built wiring harness and for some strange reason when I hit the starter it just clicks. So I moved the relays and got shocked. Whats my problem???

Your key switch could be bad or you have a broken power wire from the battery to the circuit breakers. Check everything with a voltmeter.

The only idea that i can come up with is that you dont have a good ground..or the guage was bad when you bought it..i hope this..Keith
