Have you checked your final drive belt. I've seen those things bust and hang in the bike and I've seen them run out on the ground with the rider not knowing in either case.
If the belt is still there, you may have stripped out the final drive belt front pulley. The pulley is made of rather soft metal to prevent it from wearing the final drive gear in the transmission. Replacing the final drive gear in the transmission cost about five times as much as replacing the front pulley.
Since you didn't tell me the year model of your bike, this is about the best information that I can give you.
