Check for air leaks in the exhaust system and air leaks in the intake rubbers and especially the screws where the sync gauges were connected

BACKFIREING IN CARB

This is a common problem due to the carburetor being jetted so lean. The carburetor is jetted very lean so that it will meet the EPA emission regulations. If you go up one size on the slow jet and readjust the idle mixture, this should help. The removal and disassembly of the carburetor is required to do these modifications.

My 86 suzuki intruder 700 backfires out the exhaust at idle. and makes a tapping noise. i already did a valve adjustment an new plugs

It could be the speed of one carburetor is faster than the other. This causes the backfiring as well as forces one cylinder to run lean which causes the tapping noise. You will experience an identical tapping or "ping" when you get close to empty on main fuel and need to switch to reserve. Most likely you or the previous owner unknowingly adjusted the speed of the rear carburetor down because of the high stock idle not realizing the front carburetor needs to be slowed down to match. While running simply turn the idle adjust screw clockwise on the rear carburetor until the idle smooths out and the backfiring/tapping stops.

I took off the plate rester off the stock muffler on my 1994 750c vfour honda magna. my question is it backfires when i slow down. It sound good is why i removed them well this increas horsepower a little...

The backfiring won't harm anything, it is just annoying. You can reduce the backfiring on deceleration to a minimum - or maybe eliminate it completely - by having the carburetors synchronized.

To be safe, you are probably going to be better off in the long run if you put the arrestor plates back in. Not just from a noise level concern but also because this modification may cause your allready lean-running engine to run even leaner. This can cause driveability problems in cold weather and perhaps a slight reduction in engine life.

Backfire while slowing down

your idle mixture is too lean, meaning that when your not on the throttle, your engine isnt getting enough fuel, and just a bit too much air. there is a screw to adjust this on the carburetor, on the bottom, right in front of the bowl.it may be tricky getting a small screwdriver in there to turn it though. but i would turn it out about 1/2 turn at a time untill your backfiring goes away. if that doesnt solve it, then you may just need to clean the carburetor, and repeat the process.
