I have a 2005 harley FLHT that I have gpt the PO505 code. During cold starts the bike idles fine then after a restart it idles at 800 RPM. After driving for a good distance the idle will go back to 1000 RPM. During the low idle the bike pops when I start off. I installed a Power comander with there program. Any thoughts Thanks

SOURCE: 98 Isuzu Trooper stalls on cold start, idle issues..

I had the same issue on my 99 Trooper.

It would usually start when completely cold, but idle around 2k RPM.
It would drive fine. But if I shut it down, ran into a store, and came back out, it would start but immediately idle.
Had to ride the gas a little to get it into gear.
The Check Engine light has been going on and off for 6 months or so.

I took this to my local trusted repair shop (no Isuzu dealers within 200 miles).
The diagnosed the light, and found that the Intake Gaskets were bad or leaking.
The idling problem was related to the car not being able to control the amount of air coming in.

They replaced the Intake gaskets by the next day, and I haven't had a problem since. And no more check engine light, which has been on half a year.

Here's some details from my bill:
(1) Intake Gasket set $107.95
Misc materials $21.00
2.1 hours of Labor

The total cost to me was $345.00, and I definately don't feel gipped.

SOURCE: 2001 v6 escape rough idle when cold

To update my earlier repair on the 2001 6 cyl Escape: When cold, and when the ignition was turned over but no accelerator pressure given, the rough idle finally returned the P0303 code again when the check engine light came on indicating that it wasn't caused by the plugs or the coil. FYI, I had replaced the intake manifold gaskets during the original repair and just prior to that I had replaced the fuel filter which was very dirty (I cut it open to see).

The repair manual referred to fuel injectors as a possible problem. I have run three tanks of fuel using different injector cleaning products and am very pleased with the results. Cold starts are much smoother and I am unable to coax out the P0303 code or any other code.

My opinion, change the fuel filter, use a fuel injector cleaner for a couple of tanks, change the plugs if the problem still exists. The coils were not the problem on my vehicle.

SOURCE: idle problem when warmed up

Hi there!

On the carburetor, there is an idle knob. Make sure it is not set too high. This is normal during a cold start so make sure to adjust the idle knob back at 1,100 RPM after your engine is warmed up.

Also, make sure the choke system is clean and is free. Throttle cable should have an allowance of just about .8cm.

The engine idle may also be controlled with the thermostat connected to the grill fan. it will normally idle up to about 2,000 rpm when it senses that the engine is too hot but not 4,000.00 make sure this system is working well.

let me know if this helps

SOURCE: idle too low on hot starts 2001 Avalon

Sounds like you idle air control valve is going bad. They start acting up on a hot engine due to sticking or high resistance through its internal windings. It will get to the point where the engine will stall every time you take your foot off the gas.
I suggest getting it replaced and the throttle body cleaned at the same time since it will need to be removed to replace the IAC.

Check for leak's on manifold rubber between cylinders!
Try to squirt a Carbu cleaner inside the manifold when running,if the idle going fast or dropped, then you have a leak,.

06 street glide dying until warmed up

Your cold idle setting is wrong. You need to adjust that a bit higher. When your scoot warms up, it will drop back to your warm idle setting.

Idle speed around 2000 rpm, 1st ride of the year , had this issue. I followed my Manual info and adjusted Cold and Hot adjustments. When restarted the idle was close to normal, but after a minute or 2...

Adjust the idle speed ONLY when the engine is at full operating temp. It should be idled at about 1000 RPM. It will probably be too low when cold and you may have to use the throttle control to keep the engine running until it gets completely warmed up. On the carburetor equipped engines, you cannot adjust the bike where it will idle cold and not be too high when it gets hot. The only way you can get this is with fuel injected models.

I have a 2005 harley davidson sportster xl 1200 custom. after bike is at normal operating temp.when i stop for redlight or stop sign, bike idles to fast.i can let out on clutch little bit and it will slow...

If the carb is adjusted correctly, the engine will not idle without the choke when cold. I will usually take at least 3 to 5 miles of riding to get the engine warm enough to idle by itself without the choke. If your bike is a full operating temperature, it should idle at about 1000 RPM. If it's idling higher than this, you need to slow it down a bit.

Remove the air filter cover and look at the top right side of the carb. You'll see a screw there . This is the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed to 1000 RPM or so. Blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle. Reset it if necessary. Once set, put the air cleaner cover hand on.

2003 HD Road King - starts fine, idle normal. Once it is warm, idles at 2000 rpm. Does not come back down, even after riding for an hour or two. Only idles normal when cold. Help??

If you bike is equipped with a carburetor, the idle stop screw is located at the top of the carb on the right side. Counterclockwise turn slows the idle speed.

If you bike is fuel injected, a dealer or shop will have to set the idle speed electronically.

When I start my Harley-Davidson the RPMs jump up and stick. What is wrong?

May be normal. When cold ,the bike should idle fast for a few minutes. If started hot, will idle fast for a few seconds. Cold idle should not exceed approximately 1800 rpm.
