Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Unplug the two small wires going to the starter solenoid and push the starter button . With a voltage meter on the wires from the harness you should have continuity.Reconnect the wires. Push the starter button, if you hear a click from the solenoid the button is good. Now, jump the two cable posts on the starter solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you push the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brushes. If anything else in the starter is keeping it from working (shorted or worn armature, corrosion, bad end cap, etc.) you need a new starter , the starter parts are not available from the manufacturer.

sounds like the starter relay is begging for amps,, have the battery LOAD tested, you may have a voltage that reads 12 volts, but the amps aren't there to move the starter, one bad cell in a battery will cause this to happen

Check for an in-line fuse for the started solenoid. Will the starter turn if you take a jump to the solenoid pull-in terminal?

Hi, I have the same problem on my CB500 and have out it down to a sticking solenoid. Even though there is a click this doesnt neccessarily mean the solinoid is closing the contacts, a gentle tap with a hammer on starter/solenoid frees mine up and she starts fine - for a couple of days then another love tap is required.
Other than replacing the solenoid does anyone know if this is repairable?
