Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Unplug the two small wires going to the starter solenoid and push the starter button . With a voltage meter on the wires from the harness you should have continuity.Reconnect the wires. Push the starter button, if you hear a click from the solenoid the button is good. Now, jump the two cable posts on the starter solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you push the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brushes. If anything else in the starter is keeping it from working (shorted or worn armature,corrosion, bad end cap, etc.) you need a new starter , the starter parts are not available from the manufacturer.

SOURCE: when pressing starter button it just clicks,

sounds like the starter relay is begging for amps,, have the battery LOAD tested, you may have a voltage that reads 12 volts, but the amps aren't there to move the starter, one bad cell in a battery will cause this to happen

SOURCE: Honda CB500 starting problem. When I

Hi, I have the same problem on my CB500 and have out it down to a sticking solenoid. Even though there is a click this doesnt neccessarily mean the solinoid is closing the contacts, a gentle tap with a hammer on starter/solenoid frees mine up and she starts fine - for a couple of days then another love tap is required.

Other than replacing the solenoid does anyone know if this is repairable?

If you have a click, but no starter action, bad starter solenoid, If no click wire from start switch to solenoid has bad connection at either end or a break in between. I assume you checked the battery?

Bike only starts on running starts not with starter button

Check the starter solenoid. If you hear a click when you press the starter button then your starter motor is shot, if there is no click you should try a new solenoid.

Kawasaki eliminator dont star any noise starter, when im push star botton

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if the problem is that the starter motor will not turn when the start button is pressed, determine if there is a clicking sound:
  • if there is, then the starter relay is activating but not engaging. To confirm, temporarily short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay. The starter motor should turn;
  • to locate the starter relay, follow the battery's + cable;
  • if starter motor will not turn even when the relay's terminals are jumped, the faulty starter motor most likely the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments;
  • if the starter motor spins when terminals jumped, then the starter relay is faulty;
  • if there is no clicking sound, try with the clutch lever pulled in and/or the side stand folded up;
  • check the neutral switch / light.
Postback results of above tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Starter not turning after winter. battery was removed/charg

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

If the starter motor will not turn, a few ideas to consider:
  • the starter motor is actually switched by the starter relay. The starter relay is switched by the start button;
  • on pressing the start button there would be an audible click, that would be the starter relay;
  • the starter relay will only work if the sidestand is down, the bike is in neutral and the engine switch is on. These are the interlocks/safeguards;
  • to locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the + terminal of the battery;
  • press on the start button, the starter relay should click;
  • if starter motor will not turn, jumper the two big terminals of the starter relay using a wrench. Do it on the nuts not on the threaded portion;
  • if the starter motor engages, then the starter relay is faulty;
  • if there is no click from the starter relay, either it is faulty or any of the interlocks is preventing it from working;
  • if there is click but the starter will not spin and then will spin when the terminals are jumped, then the contacts of the starter relay are faulty;
  • if even jumping the terminals, the starter motor will not turn, then it wold be a defective starter motor, most likely the carbon brushes.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Ktm 520 2000 Model STARTER PROBLEM

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, determine if there is a clicking sound when the START button is pressed. The click is significant. If there is, this indicates that the starting relay is engaging but for some reason, the starter motor is not cranking. This could either indicate a faulty starter relay (particularly the contacts) or a faulty starter motor (specifically, the carbon brushes). To determine which:
  • with the side covers off, expose the starter relay particularly the 2 large terminals;
  • have somebody start the bike normally using the key and button start switch;
  • determine if indeed the clicking is coming from the starter relay;
  • while the start button is still pressed, jump the 2 big terminals;
  • if the engine cranks, then the internal contacts of the starter relay are corroded or burned;
  • if the engine will not crank, then the starter motor is faulty.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Won't start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, let me run a couple of ideas you may want to try, check, explore or consider based on most bike designs:
  • new battery - does the neutral and/or oil light lit up when key switched to ON;
  • if no, main fuse blown normally 30 Amps, loose battery cable;
  • if yes, is there an audible click when START button press;
  • if no click sound, starter relay faulty;
  • if there is clicking sound, check with voltmeter if +12 is present at big wire going to starter motor while START is pressed;
  • if none, starter relay faulty;
  • if yes, starter motor faulty (stuck up, probably carbon brushes);
  • is Engine RUN switch ON;
  • try with clutch in;
  • exercise side stand;
  • does the bike have an alarm/security/immobilizer.
Pls get back results.

A favor, I would rather that you please do not rate this solution (yet). Due to my current rank and standing, even a Helpful would be detrimental to my rating.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
