Jack the bike up off the ground. Remove the front wheel and front fender. Loosen the pinch bolt in the lower triple tree and take the nut off the top of the upper tube at the upper tree. The fork assembly should slide down and out of the triple trees. Invert the fork tube to pour out the oil and remove the spring. Look on the very end of the lower slider where there is an 8mm bolt. Take the bolt out and the lower slider comes off the upper tube. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Add the correct amount of oil for a "dry" rebuild.

If you put it all back together right then you got to have to much fork oil in the forks. Take the screw out of both forks and push down on the front end and it will squirt oil out. put the screw back in and see how it rides. If it is still to hard then do it again till you get about 2 1/2 inches of travel in the forks and then your good to go.

Contact me directly at [email protected] and I'll scan the pages from an OEM parts book for you. BikeBandit.com has an exploded view drawing but they don't use H-D part numbers. Still, I've had good luck using that site for Japanese parts that I've needed over the years. Make sure you tell me what year model you Sporty is and remind me of what you want. I get lots of request like this and I can't remember them all.
Good Luck

Whoa, wait a minute. You don't "pound" on anything on your forks. Once you get the tube off, take the top cap off, drain the oil out of it, and look on the lower end where the axle came out, you'll find a socket head bolt. Take that bolt out and the fork tube slides right out of the fork slider. Go to http://www.bikebandit.com and look up your bike under the OEM parts section. You should be able to find an "exploded view" of your fork assembly.
Good Luck
