HAVE YOU CHECKED THE PLUGS WERE SPARKING, MY THOUGHTS WITH THIS IS A CARB RROBLEM, , REMOVE THE AIR INTAKE HOSE AND CHECK THAT THE SLIDE HAS NOT GOT GUMED UP, YOU MAY WELL SMELL FUEL AS YOU HAVE USED THE CHOKE LEVER, THE CHOKE PUTS FUEL INTO THE ENGINE THROUGH A JET WHEN THE THROTTLE IS CLOSED IN MOST CASES, THE MAIN JET AND PILOT AIR JET ARE USED WHEN THE THROTTLE IS OPEN.LETS ASSUME YOU HAVE A SPARK AT THE PLUG AND THAT THE PLUGS ALTHOUGH NEW ARE NOT FUEL OR OIL CONTAMINATED, THEN WE WILL PUT FUEL INTO THE ENGINE BY MEANS OF SOAKING A CLOTH IN PETROL AND PLACING IT IN THE AIR BOX OR RITE BEHIND THE CARB OR EVEN MOMENTARILY COVER THE CARB, TURN ON THE IGNITION AND PRESS THE STARTER BUTTON, THE VACHUME FROM THE ENGINE WILL THEN PULL IN THE FUEL FROM THE CLOTH AND THE ENGINE SHOULD FIRE, OR RUN FOR A SHORT TIME UNTIL THE FUEL ON THE CLOTH EXPIRES EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHILE CARRYING OUT THIS EXERCISE IF THE ENGINE DOES FIRE OR RUN THEN IT LOOKS LIKE YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE AND DISMANTLE THE CARBS FOR CLEANING.IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT OR YOU ARE NOT COMPETENT FIND YOURSELF A MECHANIC

Where should I start on a motorcycle that has been sitting for 20 years?

Hi Nick:
What a great project.
- I'd start with a really thorough clean up.
- You've mentioned the gas. Definitely, drain the tank, hoses, carbs, and clean the carbs. If there's a filter I'd change it.
I wouldn't even try to run it without cleaning the carbs first.
- Replace the battery, oil, and spark plug.
- Engine coolant?
- Tires? I wouldn't worry until I had it running but definitely replace.
Patience & time. You'll have an excellent bike.

Car was parked and running and just killed on its own and will not start. does this sound like the fuel pump or maybe fuel filter?

If the battery is strong and charged, starter is fine, car ran okay while getting progressively worse until it died and won't restart now, might be fuel filter or pump. I've dealt with two cars with fuel filter issues. Both would idle fine, but run progessively worse under load and eventually die and not start although everything else checked out. Engine turned fast enought to start, battery strong, alternator fine, air cleaner clean, all that. No start. Changed fuel filters and done. Everything back to normal. Both cars were about model year 1990 (1989 and 1991). Replaced one in a parking lot and car fired right back up and powered on home just fine, whereas the week leading up to it it ran worse and worse, hesitated on acceleration and finally would die if you hit the gas. Fuel filter may be in engine compartment. Looks like a canister with an in and an out for fuel. Pump is in gas tank and is way more work and money. Good luck, hope this helps.

Six years is a long time and you are plrbably having a good time getting it going. My friend, I suggest you have the Honda Shop do a dune up on your machine before youtake it anywhere serious.

thanks for your question

Has not been started in 6 years, have replaced

Was there fuel in the tank when parked 6 years ago? If there was, it has gone bad, and you are going to have to drop the tank and flush all the fuel lines, and clean the injectors, replace the fuel filter. I have let a car sit for a year or a bit more, and been able to start it, but after 6 years, the gas turns to varnish, and plugs up everything. You will probably also have issues with the brakes. You will find out as soon as you drive the Jimmy, usually the brakes will drag, and require bleeding of all lines, and usually caliper and brake cylinder rebuild. Good luck.

Bike parked for 2 years, put gas in tank wont start

If you remove the fuel line and fuel runs out. You will likely have to pull the carb and clean it up, it is probibly varnished up, clean up the needle and seat, check the float adjustment.

Hope this is of some help.

Won't start after sitting for years. Replaced battery. Turns over but will not start

What about fuel? Was fuel in the tank when the car was parked years ago? If so, the system has to be flushed and cleaned out, from and including the gas tank to the carb or injectors (all fuel lines). Have you checked for fuel and spark?

2006 Yamaha YZF-R6 will not start

try cleaning the battery terminals, check the battery voltage when you hit the starter, If you run it too long and it isnt charging a good battery you can damage the regulator again, same if you jump it off a car battery, it can cause damage
