Check your crankcase breather hose. On the '88 model, it originally came from way down low behing the oil pump up to the backside of the air filter plate. If the bike was purchased used, the original owner may have rerouted the hose in order to avoid oil getting into the air filter. Find the crankcase breather hose and check to see if it has been plugged by something or has become crimped.

I'm confused by the term "breather valve". I don't know of a breather valve on the engine. If you mean the "breather gear" in the cam chest, this is good as the originals were made of plastic. These would break a tooth off the gear and quit turning. Usually the broken tooth would lock up the oil pump and indicate a problem in the area. However I have seen on occasions that the oil pump was not locked up by the broken tooth and the engine would build up too much pressure inside. I've seen the pushrod tubes start to leak because of this. If I have misunderstood and you have not pulled the "nosecone" on your engine to check the breather gear, that could be your problem as well.

But, do not pull the nose cone unless you know what you're doing. I've fixed several bikes because the owner went to check the breather gear and didn't know what all was involved in doing this. The nosecone would come off about a quarter inch and hang up, would come the rest of the way off and wouldn't go back on either. If you need specific instructions on how to take the "nosecone" off, repost and I'll tell you how to do it. You'll need a pair of tappet block pins to do the job.

Good Luck
Steve

What would cause pressure to build up in base , pop oil dipstick , and blow oil out?

Probably a plugged pcv valve, and it sounds like excessive blow-by.
PCV valve will probably only be a few dollars.

What is causing my 300 straight 6 to blow oil out

If the oil filter is in that area check that it is fitted correctly. Check for an oil pressure sender unit in that area. Check for a failed rocker cover gasket ( loose bolts/screws or faulty PCV valve operation allowing excessive crankcase pressure which has pushed the gasket out at the loosest point.

Harley 1988 fxr to much pressure in rocker box, blowing rubber gaskets /oil leaks.what might help

ck. the crankcase vents, if they get plugged for whatever reason, it will build excess pressure in the crankcase causing the seals and gaskets to leak.

Excessive air pressure buildup that's blowing safety valve and can hear air leaking inside unit.this compressor is only about a year old!thankyou.

Excessive air pressure...if your safety valve is truely popping off, is caused by a bad pressure switch or a loose wire connection at the switch. It's a little odd to be leaking too. There is a couple a possibilities here. The most common spots for leakage is the "tube seal", the aluminum transfer/supply tube, or the outlet air hose. Usually a leak will keep a unit from acheiving full pressure causing the unit ot run continuously. The other common leakage spot is the "check valve" and a leak here usually makes the auto restart (upon using air from the tank, taking pressure below the set lower limit), not work, stalling the motor and popping a breaker. See ereplacementparts for a proper breakdown and identification of parts. Spliting the clamshell is a "pain in the neck" for these little units, but you"ll likely have to do that to find your internal leak. Carefully avoiding electrically exposed parts, spray a soapy water solution at suspected joints if the leak is not obvious.

My 1994 FLSTC keeps blowing out the front top rocker arm box seal every few thousand miles. Mechanic said it is due to poor design that year on how seal sits? Any suggestions?

Go tell your mechanic that he doesn't know what he's talking about. I own a 1994 FXDWG and the only thing it does is seep a bit of oil on the rear cylinder base gasket. Your '94 model Evo engine is what we call a "head breather" in that the crankcase pressure is vented into the air filter through hollow "union bolts" that go into each head. If you or someone else has changed these bolts to eliminate the "breathing" effect, crankcase pressure can build in the engine causing it to blow the gaskets. Another thing that could be wrong is that your breather gear in the crankcase may have a broken tooth on it. This is the rotating "valve" that allows your crankcase to evacuate the oil into the cam chest so that the oil pump can pump it back to the oil tank. The gear is made of plastic and the teeth on the gear will break off. When this happens, the "valve" will either stop turning or become out of time with the crankshaft causing excessive pressure in the engine. Also, when installing the new seals, the middle and upper rocker box covers must be aligned properly to ensure the seal is not squeezed out or pinched.

Harley Evo blowing oil through air filter. Isn't

Well, there is an "umbrella valve" in each of the center sections of the rocker box. These can and do get brittle from the repeated heating and cooling. They do a good job of keeping the bulk of oil out of the air filter but they can't get it all. As will all previous Harleys, they blow a bit of oil and those that relieve their crankcase pressure into the air filter do still make a mess that must be cleaned out occasionally. But, it shouldn't be excessive. Excessive blowby on the rings can exaggerate the problem.

To replace the "umbrella valves", simply take the bolts out of the rocker box cover and replace the gaskets and the valve. You will have to pull the fuel tanks to do this job.

I have a 1988 Audi 90 the pressure builds up in the cooling system, twice it blew out the freeze plug in the head and this time it blew out all the coolant. any suggestions?

  • You have to make sure the plug is fitted properly. If it's popping out, it is not because of to much pressure, it's because of improper installation. I see it time and time again. Not cleaning the area and preparing the plug accordingly. rust, corrosion, improper installation all lead to the plugs popping out. If you paid take it to someone who will do it right. If this was a home job I suggest a complete Freeze Plug Installation Kit and clean the plug hole completely with sandpaper and see it fits permanently.

When starting oil shoots out breather tube on air cleaner. what causes that?

It sounds like you have a condition we call "oil sumping". This is common on Softails and the old Shovelhead bikes. What is happening is when the bike is allowed to sit up for an extended period of time, the oil in the tank seeps past the check valve in the engines oil pump and collects in the engine cases. When the engine is started, the crankcase pressure blows the excess oil out of the vent which is in the air cleaner. The reason it does this is because the oil tank is higher than the engine. I thought Harley would have figured out a way to prevent this from happening in the new Twin Cam engines but I suppose they didn't.

Now, on the older Evo engines, you could reface the seat in the oil pump and stop this most of the time, but I don't know how to stop it on a Twin Cam since they've got a completely different oil pump.

On an Evo, there is another thing that would cause this as well. If you had something come through the oil pump and it locked the scavenge gears up and sheared the drive key, all the oil in the tank would be in the engine. This would cause oil to blow out of the air cleaner as well.

Check the level of the oil in your oil tank. The stick has two marks on it. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill your oil tank.

Oli leaking 1990 yj

Look for leaks high on the engine, like valve cover gaskets...

High oil pressure, if you actually had that, would not necessarily exit the engine....Crankcase pressures are not related to system pressure, per se.

Get a mirror and inspect very carefully.. Sometimes you have to clean the engine and test again, as air blows leaks all over (while driving...)
