Get your side stand up! , it will kill the ignition if it is down when you put the bike in gear.

I have a 1990 honda valkyrie interstate bike starts up when i put it in first gear it shuts off.. cant figure the problem out and it ran fine before the snow hit sat for 2 months

A Sticky clutch springs to mind in that scenario.

Engine off
Put bike in 1st gear
Pull the clutch in

Can you push the bike forwards?

You can also try running the bike on tick over until the bike is fully warmed up to heat the clutch plates.

I have a 2001 Suzuki 800 Marauder motorcycle. when it gets warmed up after a long ride. When I turn it off, restart it and put it in 1st gear it stops the motor. what,s causing this.

Many of the Suzuki's including Boulevard, Intruder and others have cut off switches in the kick stand. As long as the stand is down the engine will die when shifted into neutral.

2001 SUZUKI INTRUDER 1400. THIS WEEKEND WENT ON A LONG TRIP AND MY BIKE STARTED ACTING UP. IT WOULD NOT DOWN SHIFT FROM 3RD TO 2ND AND I COULDNT GET INTO NEUTRAL UNTIL I PULLED OVER AND TURNED BIKE OFF....

Your description suggests the clutch should be your first port of investigation - as it works ok when cold it is unlikely an adjustment issue but there are wear patterns on clutch parts that can cause the problem.

Clutch plate tongues can become hooked and embedded into wear grooves in the clutch basket and semi-worn plates can suffer from being held together by suction.

I wonder if maybe the kickstand switch is bad letting the bike think the kickstand is down. When you let out the clutch it shuts of the engine as if the kickstand is actually down.
