I have a 2000 v star 1100 classic. The voltage has randomly been fluctuating. At about half throttle it`s charging about 17.5 - 18V then drops to about 14 - 15V. Checked impedance on the stator, seems fine but AC voltage between 3 white wires at regulator from stator approx. 15V AC. Not sure if stator or regulator. Feedback will be appreciated.@
It could be a connection issue. Check all charging connections for corrosion. If you have too much resistance in one or more connections you'll have a voltage drop across the connection. The voltage drop will make the regulator think the battery is undercharged and pump more current to it. Loose connections will also cause the problem.

your voltage/reg. can be tested in a couple different ways check ground res. check res. then revs. bias on diodes you have ac in dc out it sounds like you may have a diode gone bad allowing ac curent to flow causing the wires to get hot
SOURCE: have a 2002 vstar 1100 custom. where is stator
Just remove the left cover. The stator is bolted to the cover on the inside. Could you take a moment and rate my answer? Thanks!
SOURCE: Where does the oil come out of a 2004 Yamaha 1100 VStar Classic
Oil drain plug is located near the bottom of the engine, left side toward the front. The oil filter element is located on the right side of the engine under the cover toward the front. Changing the oil filter usually requires removal of the front exhaust pipe. There is an aftermarket filter relocation kit that replaces the filter element with a spin on filter that mounts on the front of the bike.
