Sounds too large, I would have thought something more like 0.008" for inlet and 0.010" for exhaust?

0.006 in. (0,15 mm.) is good enough for both intake and exhaust. Or if you want exact value, see service manual.

When I pull on the starter rope it kicks back.

Its a BR500 550 or 600 4-stroke to much pre ignition (failure inside the module is not possible ) The ignition timing is
constructive recorded and can
thereby at
assembly work not
be adjusted.
In this type of inflammation is
ruled out mechanical wear.
One caused by wear
altering the ignition timing
during use is not
possible.

or intake-valve is not good adjusted

0,15...0,3 mm gap between ignitionmodule
NGK CMR 6 H
0,7 mm sparkplug gap.
