I have a 1980 Honda CX 500 Custom and the Temperature gauge shows hot if I run the bike above 6000 rpm for any length of time. If I run a bit slower it seems to hold its own. What temp should the coolant be under normal highway driving conditions? George

Honda temperature gauges tend to run high before the electric fans kick in. They also tend to read differently on different bikes of the same model (fuel gauge, temp gauge , speedometer, etc.)Your fan is driven attached directly to your cam so it spins constantly. If your machine is not actually overheating or boiling over and has plenty of anti freeze, I would just keep an eye on it and not worry about it. If your engine gets really hot it will tend to leak anti freeze down the left rear cover past the water pump seal. This is normal and should be of little concern unless the water pump develops a steady drip. Then the water pump seal is bad and will need to be replaced.

Change the thermostat and unscrew the temp sensor and clean it off with steel wool.

WHERE IS THE( OIL DIP STICK) ON A 1980 HONDA 500CX

I have an old bike also, no dip-stick, but theres a sight glass on the right side of the engine, down low on the side case, you should put it on the center stand first and add oil slowly until you see the oil in the sight glass, only fill it 1//4 of the way, start bike, run for 30 second- to 1 minute the turn it off and check the level when it cools down again, add more oil slowly as needed but dont fill above halfway in the sight glass.

Do I have to have the fan or can i run the motarcycle without it?

Your motorcycle needs the fan to regulate the temperature of the engine. I would not suggest running the bike without a fan.

I was told the CDI unit on a 1980 Honda CX 500 is bad... how do I test it to be sure? Thanks

Takes special equipment to test the CDI ... does your bike start? run? if not ... there is that possibility that who ever told you it is bad is correct.

How to replace thermostat on 1980 honda cx 500 silverwing motercycle

Drain the radiator and remove the fuel tank. The thermostat is in a housing between the two cylinder heads. Two 6 mm bolts(10 mm wrench)hold the stat cover down. Replace the o-ring and thermostat together. Thermostat can be tested by placing in a pot of water on the stove, heat the water, and check opening temperature with candy thermometer. I had a friend that removed his and never put it back. It just took longer for the bike to warm up. good for warm climates but not cold climates.

Perhaps you got one of the new Honda 1980 Tech where they are using a Turbo to gain HP(Kw). It is a white elephant but a technology experiment. Bike too heavy for turbo, not very agile. Google CX500 and read it's review in NZ Bikers magazine 2010 March edition.

Check to see if your battery is any good. A battery that is no good, will not keep a charge.
That would be the next step, and most likley your problem if the battery froze, or the bike sat for a long time.
