Burned up cdi unit,replaced with a used one and did the same in a few minutes,took the yamaha 2001 kodiak 400 to a dealer and they replaced the unit with a new one and it also burned up,its expensive try and error,now the dealer wants to try a stator???? not sure what to do?? also expensive parts to try,is there a way to test the whole circuit????

It is most likely gonna be the cdi inside the motor. Those are famous for going out. It's not a bad change tho. The part is about 250 dollars and you'll need a new gasket and oil. And really that's all.
The starter Bendix gear must be stuck in the disengage position, and is not engaging the flywheel. Try hitting the starter with a rubber mallet or with a piece of wood and a hammer. You may be able to loosen the gear by spraying some WD40 or the like into the gear. You probably should take the starter off to clean /lube the gear. If all fails, you're looking at a new starter.
I had the same problem on my 2003 Kodiak. It ended up being the CDI Box. The Warn Winch was the cause. I had to replace the CDI Box on my twice before figuring out it had to do with the winch since it happened only after using it. I used the winch before when new and never had a problem.
