I just purchased a 1984 Suzuki GS 550 L and not sure if this is normal or not. When I start up the bike, it takes about 3 - 4 minutes with the choke on maximum, then slowly ease it off till it stays idling. The total warm up to idle is about 4 -5 minutes. I have never had this with other bikes I have had. The seller showed me the work he did on it and the receipts, so I believe the carbs were rebuilt as he says. Thanks

SOURCE: electrical problem

Suzukis aren't the only bikes with this problem. Certain Hondas are notorious for stator shorting. If you can get the temperature down you will be able to get MANY more miles out of the stator. I'm referring to the stator temperature. If you have any heavy load accessories (extra lights, boom box, etc.) you will need to get rid of them. If the battery is ancient it will really load up the alternator. Check out the rectifier. My last BMW had a small daylight running headlight that drew about a third of the night time headlight wattage. If all is well electrically, install an aftermarket oil cooler on the engine.

SOURCE: bike wont run when choke is at half way setting

Sounds a lot like fouled fuel jets in your carb; you may have a little work to do.
If the jets do not allow sufficient fuel to pass, using the choke can 'cheat' the carburetor by restricting the flow of air and restoring the fuel-air ratio. You can't ignore this problem since the 'cheated' condition does not let the engine develop the power for which it was designed.

Bike is totally choked

You mean flooded (with too much gas)?

You said the carbs were cleaned.
Did it work ok after that, or is that when the problem started?
Do you use the choke to start it when cold? When warm/hot? not at all because you figure its getting too much gas as it is?

How do i adjust or tune up my carb on a 1985 suzuki gs 550 l runs but the has to be choked out

If it is running like that with new fuel the problem could be plugged idle jet circuits. The carburetors will have to be removed, opened and cleaned. You will need compressed air for this job. Good idea to replace all 'O'rings inside carb at this time.

1981 550 suzuki one cyclinder is dead has spark and fuel and bike runs but start extremly hard seems cold blooded

Check compression of cylinders, all should be close the same. Swap spark plugs and check if problem cylinder moved. If bike sits for long periods of time then most likely it will be a plugged carburetor.

A FRIEND GAVE ME A 1982 SUZUKI GS550L WAS PARKED FOR OVER 5 YRS + AND IT STARTED WITH A JUMP START I THINK THE BATT IS NO GOOD DONT HOLD CHARGE WHEN ITS RUNNING , THE FLANGES HOLDING THE CARBS LEAKS...

The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.

1980 GS 550 Suzuki Clutch Cable Broke

you do need to take the clamp on section of the shiffter off. You shouldn't loose any oil unless you have other issue. just remove the outer cover and you will see where the cable connects, piece of cake. good luck
