Bike shuts off after choke is pushed in, idles with the choke out, changed the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs after winter storage. it is a 1996 Honda shadow 600
SOURCE: will only run with full choke and absolutely no throttle.
Carbs gummed up. Need a serious cleaning or a full ruubers replacement/rebuild kit. Gas turns to gummy when left stting in the fuel bowls.
Use a couple of cans of Sea Foam.. best stuff in the world.

You sound like you have a blocked idle jet in the carb. Honda trail bikes love new oil, clean air cleaners and clean fuel. After a while a build up of tannins and crusty residue will invade the carby bowl and usually migrate through the carb via the jets and the emulsion tube where the jet needle runs. The easiest way to fix your problem is to remove the carb and go through it. Clean all jets and check float height and generally get it back to scratch. You will have to re- adjust your idle and mixture settings after you have fited it back to the bike. If you are not Mechanicaly savi then I would suggest you take the bike in to your local honda dealer and get them to go through the carb for you.. It's not a big problem and is easlily fixed.
Hope this helps...
Cheers...
SOURCE: 2004 honda shadow 600 VLX leaking fork seal bike
The seal under the dirt seal on the fork was leaking when I picked the bike up from the owner. left the fork oil under the dirt seal kept bouncing the forks up and down for 4 days the seal got soft from the fork oil so I pulled the dirt seal up then cleaned the fork oil under it with a rag then checked it for leaks then pushed dirt seal back down in the groove and its not leaking now 200 miles and still dry.

You will have to check the carbs it seems the gas isn't flowing in freely into the float chamber and filling it up.

check fuel level, u may need to check the flow of petrol to it,,Also if that does not solve you may need to service the carb and check fuel filter, air filter etc...
