Bike runs good up through the gears until you let up on the throttle and it backfires more than normal and won't pick up after downshifting, it stalls and you have to pull the clutch in and select the right gear and restart it that way. It is a 2008 TE450, first time out this spring, was going to just replace the plug and see if that would do it.

Might be a throttle cable sticking. I would disconnect, from the throttle and drop some synthetic oil down the cable after finding some way to straighten it up and allow the oil to flow through the cable. It is an overnight operation and might actually take several applications.
As for the backfiring, I would question if you have carbs or fuel injections. If the later, you might be leaving your throttle open slightly and giving the bike fuel which pops off while changing gears.

WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..
If there are aftermarket exhaust pipes on your bike, the carburetor should have been rejetted at the same time. It does sound like a lean issue, especially where your spark plugs are tan/white. It's not going to hurt anything to be a little lean, just have an annoying backfire. The only time you should have to worry is if your plugs have no color but white and it backfires while riding, not only downshifting. If you are concerned about the backfiring, I would suggest changing jets, especially the pilot jet. The pilot jet is where you are getting your backfire from. When you let off the throttle and downshift, the main jet circuit is closed and fuel is pulled through the pilot circuit. The pilot circuit cannot provide as much fuel as the main circuit, especially when the motor pulls higher rpms on downshift. This will cause a lean backfire. hi,sounds to me like the air fuel ratio is all up the ***,locate the air/fuel screw on the carb(normally on the side)screw the screw right in untill it stops,then back the screw out 1.5 turns,this should get the bike to run without the choke,once you have the bike running simply turn the screw in or out untill the bike settles into a nice steady idle,should be good to go,hope this helps...cheers
Your bike has the TwinCam 88 motor which is rubber mounted to the bike. The slight ticking noise is coming from the tappets in the cylinder heads and is normal. When you are downshifting, are you going down in steps (5th to 4th then release the clutch and let it slow, then 4th to 3rd release the clutch and let it slow, etc.) or are you just running through them all at once (pressing down on the shifter without releasing the clutch until you are in 1st and then letting it out)?
There is some "clunking" that occurs in the tranny that is NORMAL but if the "clunk" is more pronounced, it could have something to do with the way you downshift...downshifting in steps as described above is the best way to downshift. no your totally wrong the backfire is bcause if u juice the throttle there is excess fule in the cylinders witch give it no where to go so it ignights and creates a backfire witch is not necessarly bad.
Hi ......... sounds like the petrol is igniting in the pipe, could be valve needs reground (carryout a compression check), leak in the exhaust system (all gaskets & joints good ?). What colour is the spark plug ? Have you recently put a new pipe, filter or re jetted the bike ?
has good power and I got a great deal. I just ordered the Clymer manual (3-5 days delivery) so I am posting here to see if you folks have any quick suggestions. I noticed that the engine has a slight backfire/sputtering on deceleration and would take a while to warm up so I was thinking that it was running a little on the lean side. There was also some minor bluing on the exhaust. I took the plugs out last night and they appeared to be fouled. They were coated with carbon (not wet oil). Now I was thinking that it might be running a little rich. I cleaned the plugs and re-gapped at .0035. The engine seemed to warm up quickly but the it was still sputtering a little when downshifting and decelerating. What do you think this is? yeah backfiring while decelerating or downshifting can mean that you are running a little rich. I adjusted the idle screws on my bike to make that problem go away. Makes sense since as you slow down you normally release the throttle to virtually closed anyway...
I havent had that problem since. Except now I get backfiring while riding at highway speeds... methinks my carbs are being flooded and the float levels need to be adjusted.,,,
