Use whatever grade is printed in the user manual or on the oil cap. Synthetic and dinosaur oil can be interchanged as desired, but should not be intermixed. If you have high mileage, you could step up one grade. I.E OEM 5w/30, 120k miles you could use 5W/40.

Wrong oil?

Have the oil changed as it is wrong viscosity oil. It should be 20w -40 or 15w 30. Mixing synthetic and mineral oils is not a good idea as the bases are different and may cause engine problems. Most service departments use mineral oil as synthetic oil is too dear for a normal service and the customer would complain about the price.. Synthetic oil has no real advantage over mineral oil unless you are rallying or racing but in normal driving it is an expensive waste as you have to change the oil at least every 10.000klms to remove the wasted additives the hold water ,carbon, and other combustion by products in suspension to be removed when the oil is drained out.

I have conflicting advice as to whether i should be using synthetic or standard oil. please advise

VW group have TWO service regimes,annually/10k or extended ( when the service indicator shows when you need to service it).this is set when the dealer supplies the car NEW.it cannot be reset after.VW group products fit 5/30 fully synthetic when new and the type of oil for services is determined by the service type,I.E. annual/10k services, use 10/40 semi synthetic and for extended/20k services use 10/40 fully synthetic.check the oil every 500 miles as ALL VW will use oil.if you bought the car used, then, rather than use the service indicator, do an oil change EVERY year and use semi 10/40.if a dealer services the car the service indicator should be reset EVERY time.

What kind of engine oil does 1991 mercedess need?

5/40 fully synthetic - Shell Helix Ultra, or (cheaper) 10/40 Semi-synthetic Shell Helix Plus. The volume depends on the engine capacity, for example the 2litre engine needs 5.8 litres. For my own Mercedes I use 5/40 fully synthetic oil from Tesco, it meets all the tough technical specifications and it is considerably cheaper than branded oils.

Trying to locate the oil filter in my 2004 mini cooper

The oil filter is on the right rear corner of the engine as you look at it from the front of the car. It is an aluminum cap with a 36mm nut on the top.
