So, i have a brand new battery, and i replaced the starter relay which is located at the other end of the positive (red) wire coming from the battery. when i turn the key on, lights and everything comes on. when i try starting it, all i'm getting is lots of clicking which seems to be coming from the relay (which i just replaced), or the igniter box. I am affraid that i'm not getting any power even down to my starter to crank it. what should i be looking for?

G'day.I can help you with this.The clicking noise is the starter relay(solinoid)activating.This means it is likely the starter motor is at fault.Two more tests to prove it.Next,using a jumper cable,connect one end to battery posative, touch starter motor posative terminal(by-passing solinoid).Did starter motor turn?It's likely it didn't.If it didn't you would suspect one of two things.One is a faulty starter motor-To test remove-bench test NOTE do this test with starter motor in a vice or on floor with foot on starter holding it down)-connect battery negative to body of starter motor-Battery posative touch to starter motor posative-Does it spin?(sometimes they will but with no torque).If it dosn't spin,sounds rough or seems weak then the starter motor has worn out brushes or is burnt out.Replace brushes or starter motor to repair. IF the starter motor bench tests fine- then the cause is a seized starter clutch or engine.To test if engine is seized up(unlikely)turn over with a wrench on the end of the crank(Engine LHS).
Hope this was helpfull

    wow, ok thanks. i was thinking the possibility of a faulty starter, but i didn't want to take the time to tear it out yet to check it before asking around and doing some more research. i'll go ahead and pull the starter out and give it a check. as far as touching the starter motor to the positive end of the battery, i did try jumping across the solinoid with a screwdriver, which unless i'm mistake would be similar to connecting a cable between the positive end of the battery and the positive end of the terminal. and when i tried that i didn't even get the clicking of the solinoid activating, all i got was my lights dimming way down. no sound of the starter spinning. like i said, ill go ahead and pull the starter out and check it over

  • Anonymous May 11, 2011

    Before you pull the starter out,check that the engine actually turns over.With a new battery-shorting the solinoid made no clicking noise(which is right, you didn't activate the solinoid you by-passed it.).But this causes your lights dimming way down(high current draw). Must be bad connection at battery or earth, a seized engine, or shot starter motor. If the engine turns over,the battery leads clean & tight,battery all good, then the starter is shot.

Where is the cooling fan relay located on a 94 Chevy Beretta 3.1?

It is located at the rear of the engine compartment behind the right strut tower. Thyere are 3 or 4 relays there in a cluster. The one you want has 4 wires: 2- RED 1- LIGHT BLUE and 1- DARK GREEN.

Both of the RED wires are HOT at all times. They come from fusible link [G] located at the starter solenoid (RUST colored).

The LIGHT BLUE wire goes to the cooling fan. This one should be hot whenever the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) turns the relay on. One of the RED wires provides battery positive voltage to the LIGHT BLUE wire when the PCM grounds the relay primary (coil) circuit to operate the relay.

The DARK GREEN wire is the relay control circuit from the PCM. One of the RED wires feeds battery positive voltage to the relay coil and the PCM controls the relay by providing GROUND for the relay coil. The DARK GREEN wire goes to Connector #2, PIN #2 at the PCM.

The bike was running great,now when i go to push to start button.nothin happens no clicking,nothing.and it isnt the battery.battery is brand new and fully charged.any help???

There will be a starter relay that the thick cable from the positive (red) connected to the battery will run to. This relay is operated by the start button and operates a small low voltage coil that then connects the larger high amp connection to the starter. You can trace the thick positive back from the starter to the same relay. Relay will have 4 wires - 2 thick red, a poitive + and earth that is switched via the start button. You can test the starter by bypassing the relay with a jumper lead fron the battery positive to the positive on the starter.The small coil that activates the relay (the two small wires) can be tested with a multimeter on OHMS scale - not sure of the reading that you should have for your bike but should not be open circuit. Check all the connectors are ok as they can be exposed to the elements and get corroded.

1984 D150 truck 318 2brl carb won't turn over...no lights, no hor

I would check your fusible links. The wires that they are on are what power everything in your cab. Usually they're attached to the starter, the starter solenoid, or the positive battery terminal. Hope this helps!

Car will start no sound nothing,but had battery tested and is working great.could starter be the cause it is 1998 plymouth

1. Check the Starter Relay located in the PDC = Power Distribution Center located in the engine compartment on the left side. Remove the cover. The Fuse and Relay location/identification should be on the back (inside) of the cover. Also check your owners manual for addtional information on the Fuse and Relay identification/location.
2. After locating the Starter Relay: There should be a Spare Relay; IF NOT then LOCATE a non-engine operation Relay (on a function that works!) of similar Type and Size and switch these out. Again check for Starter Operation. If this works: then the original Relay is bad and must be replaced. If it does not work, and the other non-engine function you switched out with does still work, then the Relay was not the problem.
If this does not work:
3. With a partner at the wheel: You go under the front of the vehicle. Locate the Starter which should be on the front of the engine. Using a heavy gage jumper wire. Touch one end of the jumper wire to the large (red) wire connection (bolt/nut). Touch the other end to the main body of the Starter Motor. The Starter has two components: the Starter Solenoid and the Starter Motor. They are integrated/combined into one unit. The Starter Solenoid is the Smaller of the cylindrical shapes. The Starter Motor is the Larger of the cylindrical shapes. Have your partner turn the Key to the Start Position. If it Starts, then the Starter Solenoid is bad and the Starter (Solenoid & Motor) Unit must be replaced.

I don't understand my wiring diagram.How does the positive and negative cables hook up to the starter relay and to the battery.I have one small red wire coming from my wiring harness does this wire connect...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

If the starter relay in your version uses blue / white and red / white wires, then to my understanding, connection would be:
  • blue / white - goes to the start switch and is supplied with +12 on starting;
  • red / white - goes to the starter circuit cut-out relay. This cut-out relay controls whether the starting relay gets a ground based on neutral/gear and clutch lever conditions.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

1985 Yamaha xj700 Maxim-I am confused about my positive and negative cables.I have a red wire coming from my main harness and a cable on the positive side of the battery does the red wire and the red cable...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Pls see your other post, but basically:
  • in most, one end of the red wire is connected straight to the battery's + terminal. The other end of the red wire goes to the main fuse;
  • the black of course as you posted goes to the ground;
  • interchanging the 2 wires from the starter relay would make no difference;
  • the starter relay is not directly grounded;
  • the starter relay's + wire goes to the starter button;
  • the starter  relay's - wire goes to starter cut-off activated by safety interlocks (neutral and clutch lever).

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Won t start after sitting for two weeks

check the starter, starter motor and the starter are one unit. just under nearth the battery. make sure the red battery wire is tight. and the black ground is tight to the chassis.
if you don't hear any clicking sound, the starter is bad, need replacement.
if you hear clicking sound then look for the starter module. mounted on the side of the distributor.
these are two most problem area.
if it still don't start, go to zcar.com or 300xcar.com
they should able to give you most place to look.

good luck
