G'day.I can help you with this. The clicking noise is the starter relay(solinoid)activating. This means it is likely the starter motor is at fault. Two more tests to prove it.Next, using a jumper cable, connect one end to battery posative, touch starter motor posative terminal(by-passing solinoid).Did starter motor turn? It's likely it didn't.If it didn't you would suspect one of two things. One is a faulty starter motor-To test remove-bench test NOTE do this test with starter motor in a vice or on floor with foot on starter holding it down)-connect battery negative to body of starter motor-Battery posative touch to starter motor posative-Does it spin?(sometimes they will but with no torque). If it dosn't spin, sounds rough or seems weak then the starter motor has worn out brushes or is burnt out.Replace brushes or starter motor to repair. IF the starter motor bench tests fine- then the cause is a seized starter clutch or engine. To test if engine is seized up(unlikely)turn over with a wrench on the end of the crank(Engine LHS).
Hope this was helpfull

wow, ok thanks. i was thinking the possibility of a faulty starter, but i didn't want to take the time to tear it out yet to check it before asking around and doing some more research. i'll go ahead and pull the starter out and give it a check. as far as touching the starter motor to the positive end of the battery, i did try jumping across the solinoid with a screwdriver, which unless i'm mistake would be similar to connecting a cable between the positive end of the battery and the positive end of the terminal. and when i tried that i didn't even get the clicking of the solinoid activating, all i got was my lights dimming way down. no sound of the starter spinning. like i said, ill go ahead and pull the starter out and check it over
Before you pull the starter out, check that the engine actually turns over. With a new battery-shorting the solinoid made no clicking noise(which is right, you didn't activate the solinoid you by-passed it.).But this causes your lights dimming way down(high current draw). Must be bad connection at battery or earth, a seized engine, or shot starter motor. If the engine turns over, the battery leads clean & tight, battery all good, then the starter is shot.
