If your computer recognises "New hardware found" when it is connected to the usb port it could be better to have Device Manager find and instal the best driver from the many available on the internet but failing that an internet search produces many results...
Go to the Windows 7 Hardware Compatability List and find your device. If it is NOT listed, it will not function. If it is listed, you will find all the encessary particulars.
if you are having trouble with your drivers here is a general look at the drivers and how to update them if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x right click to reinstall drivers or if you can see your usb but its not working ports(com&lpt)right click update driver hope this helps
If it is a USB external drive it should be recognized by your laptop, it worked for my dell floppy drive from xp to win 7 64bit, if it does not you should download the winxp driver and use it to install in win 7 when it does not recognizes the drive.
-select have drivers -select downloaded drivers
it would give you an error of pop up saying drivers are not "signed" just go ahead a accept that and it should work.
