Shift cams ( more correctly known as shift drums ), never get broken and I have never seen one wear out in over 40 years of fixing bikes. No real pressure is put on them and they only rotate due to the shift lever moving up or down. The noise is likely a broken tooth on the clutch hub or generator gear or (possibly), too much slack in the cam chain. Please rate my answer. Thanks!
